KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali should accept the offer to become Bersatu's new secretary-general, says Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
Speaking to Sinar Harian, Hamzah said the proposal by party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was carefully considered, reflecting Azmin's qualifications for the role.
"When the president makes a request, all aspects are evaluated. Azmin is qualified and should accept it. His decision to consider the offer rather than outright reject it shows thoughtfulness," Hamzah said, addressing perceptions that Azmin's response indicated rejection.
Azmin, currently Selangor Bersatu chairman, was named as the candidate during the party's July 13 convention, where Muhyiddin also proposed Hamzah as deputy president after Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu opted to contest for vice president.
Hamzah described Azmin as a capable and experienced leader suited for the secretary-general role.
Commenting on the upcoming Bersatu annual general assembly, Hamzah said it is crucial to demonstrate the party's continued relevance and inclusivity.
"We are a party with an ideology that appeals to all. While our foundation focuses on Malays and Bumiputeras, we've also introduced a non-Malay wing, elevating its leader to the equivalent of a vice president," he added.
Hamzah said this inclusivity does not undermine Bersatu's core identity but reinforces its broader responsibilities to all Malaysians.
