Datuk Haji Hanifah bin Noordin graduated from University Malaya with an Honours Degree in Economics in 1973 and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant and Certified Public Accountant in 1976. He was a practising accountant for more than 20 years and was the Chairman and Managing Partner of Ernst & Whinney (now known as Ernst & Young) for 9 years. He also served as the President of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) in 1987 and led the Institute for 13 years until 2000. In that capacity, he also served as a Board member of the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). Previously, he had also served on the boards of several public listed companies, government-linked companies and government committees.
