By Nor Ain Mohamed Radhi - April 4, 2019 @ 1:12pm KUALA LUMPUR: After selling off superyacht Equanimity, the government is considering selling land to pare down its debt, but only to Malaysians, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
"We see a possibility of reducing debt through identifying government's assets, which we can sell.
"In fact, we may, if necessary, sell land belonging to the government. But of course, we will (only) sell it to Malaysians and not foreigners.
"That will help (in our efforts) to reduce our (national) debt," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.
Dr Mahathir said efforts were underway to reduce the government's debt.
"At the moment, the process is still on-going. The debt is being lowered and efforts are being worked on all the time."
Asked on the latest amount of debt, he replied; "I can't give the exact figure but I believe it has been reduced quite considerably."
Earlier, Dr Mahathir said the national debt is at a manageable level.
"It (the amount) has come down. The finance minister will know the exact figure.
"First, our economy has grown in the last one year, hence the debt owed by us has become smaller.
"Secondly, we have been able to recover quite a lot of money that was lost as well as those kept in Singapore.
"Thirdly, we were also working hard to reduce the contract value of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), because if we don't continue with it, we will have to pay very huge compensation. So that is being managed." he said.
Previously, it was reported that the government's debt stood at RM1.087 trillion.
Yesterday, the Attorney-General Tommy Thomas announced that the Equanimity will be sold to Genting Malaysia Bhd or its special purpose vehicle (SPV) company at the price of US$126 million, ranking as the highest recovery to date for the Malaysian government from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

Beliau berkata, kerajaan yakin dapat mengurangkan beban hutang peninggalan kerajaan terdahulu menerusi beberapa aset termasuk tanah, selepas menjual kapal mewah Equanimity.

SEREMBAN: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng hints that the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will include Negri Sembilan, if negotiations with the Chinese government is successful, and the project continues.
The project could go on if negotiations between Council of Eminent Persons chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin and the Chinese government went well and the government could cut the cost down to RM36bil, said Lim.

"If this project cost can be cut down to RM36bil, then it is good news not only for the country, but also for Negri Sembilan. "And I say Negri Sembilan because the route will change and this is good for the state," said Lim at a ceramah in Kuala Sawah near here on Friday night (April 5).
He, however, refused to divulge further about his veiled announcement.
"I ask the press to not ask me about this because I can't say much about it.
"If the negotiations are successful, the route will change and this will be great news for Negri Sembilan.
"If you want good news, please support Pakatan Harapan in forming a clean, democratic, fair and united government," said Lim.
Later, when a reporter asked him to clarify his announcement, the DAP secretary-general simply put a finger to his lips, indicating silence.
He was present in a group ceramah to drum up support for Pakatan candidate in Rantau, Dr S. Streram, in the April 13 polls.
The 688-kilometre ECRL railway track project from Port Klang to Gombak and onwards to Kuantan and Pengkalan Kubor, was put on hold after the Pakatan government came into power in the May 9 general election last year and negotiations on the project cost is currently underway

ECRL to proceed at smaller scale, lower cost KONG SEE HOH / 07 APR 2019 / 17:11 H. ECRL to proceed at smaller scale, lower cost The original proposed route for the ECRL on March 8, 2017. The new route has yet to be revealed. — Bernama FOLLOWING months of negotiations, Malaysia and China have reached an agreement to resume the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which was suspended last July.
It will be carried out on a smaller scale, and at a lower cost with some changes to the route, Sin Chew Daily reported today.
The daily learnt that the cost of the project, which was originally tagged at RM66 billion, will be slashed by more than RM10 billion.
A well-placed source told the daily that what the two parties had arrived at was a win-win solution as the re-negotiated project includes new commercial elements, which will bring about greater benefits to local entrepreneurs and people.
It is learnt that an agreement will be signed prior to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s visit to China at the end of this month, marking the resumption of the project.
The source said Council of Eminent Persons chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin, who is representing Malaysia in the negotiations, will fly to Beijing soon to sign the agreement.
Mahathir is scheduled to visit China from April 24 to 28 at the invitation of Chinese premier Xi Jinping to attend the second Belt and Road Initiative summit.
It is understood that Mahathir will address the summit and emphasise Malaysia’s support for the Belt and Road Initiative.
According to the report, environmental considerations are the main reason that changes will be made to the ECRL route.

Construction on the RM9bil light rail transit (LRT) line and the RM9.6bil Pan Island Link 1 (PIL 1) are scheduled to start in June next year. The Star learnt that the PIL has received approval from the Department of Environment – the federal regulator overseeing the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report – in March while the LRT is expected to receive a conditional approval from the Transport Ministry in May.
Both mega projects will be tendered to local and international companies at the end of the year.
