GEORGE TOWN: Move out of Penang island and settle on the mainland to help ease pollution and congestion? That seems to be the advice of a state executive councillor.
State exco in charge of the environment, Phee Boon Poh (pix), said Penang is encouraging families to resettle in the sparsely populated townships of Batu Kawan, Kepala Batas and Nibong Tebal on the mainland to reduce pollution.
He said Penang has witnessed record levels of rainfalls, floods, landslides and severe storms due to climate change.
Highly urbanised districts in George Town and Balik Pulau, as well as Butterworth and Bukit Mertajam, are overwhelmed when mother nature strikes, he said.
"We and the rest of the world should have been better prepared. Dire warnings were issued by scientists at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. We chose to ignore and now we have to seriously look into it," he said.
One of the immediate worries about climate change is food supply and the managing of water resources, Phee told theSun. He said crops and paddy fields would be affected if there were constant floodings.
The local authorities have moved to ban all types of plastics from the state by next year to better manage waste disposal including plastics, he added.
"It will cost Penang some RM800 million to relocate the Jelutong landfill," he said.
Efforts to minimise the discharge of waste into the riverine and the coastal area also need to be doubled, said Phee.
The state plans to encourage resettlement of residents into areas where the populations are smaller, Phee said.
He said the state government Penang would upgrade amenities to make them livable and attractive.
The comprehensive Penang Transport Master Plan would make connectivity be better, he said.
