Need for Malaysia to stay at forefront of AI development

CYBERJAYA: YTL Communications Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Wing K Lee has emphasised the importance of Malaysia staying at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI) development.

Wing said deploying an AI supercomputer within Malaysia, particularly integrated with the YES network, will ensure minimal latency.

"Even on another network, the latency will be very good because it is domestic. That in turn, will give Malaysians a competitive match compared to Singapore and Taiwan," he told reporters at Experian Malaysia's GenAI Tech Week here today.

Wing observed that currently, Malaysians, whether they are AI developers or users, encounter increased latency when accessing hyper scalers outside Malaysia, necessitating trips to places like Singapore, Taiwan, the US or the UK.

"But if latency goes up, it may not be competitive. By having low latency access to high graphics processing units (GPU), like we are doing, we can provide equal access to high quality AI to all Malaysians, wherever they are in the country," he added.

This is good news, AWS planned investment of US$9 billion in AI data centres and infrastructure in Singapore region will add more AI jobs to the already competitive landscape in Johor-Singapore.

As Singapore has a limit of 50MW for new data centre builds per year, the headline figure of US$9 billion implies an investment of US$2.25 billion a year for max 50MW of AI data centre, which is deemed very expensive.

It costs about half the figure, or about US$1.2 billion only, to build a similar 50MW AI data centre in Johor.

I am sure when AWS team carries out due diligence, they will realise how much they could save by having YTL Power to build the AI data centres for them at the Kulai park which has a fibre connection to Singapore to reduce latency to minimum.

Specialization/economic Specialization was recorded in the first Chapter (Genesis 49) where Jacob blessed his sons that they have different skill and ability.

There the early theologians learned about the concept of Specialization and introduced to the universities. Anyway, theology was the first faculty in the university like University of Paris and later they have Psychology. It was not Computer Science or dentistry then.
