Covid-19 cases in Florida have risen by 948% in just two weeks, as the highly transmissible Omicron variant drives a huge wave of infections and hospitalizations across the US.
Even as Dr Anthony Fauci – Joe Biden’s top medical adviser – cautioned the public to look at hospitalizations and not infections in order to gauge Omicron’s severity, the seven-day average for US patients hospitalized with Covid-19 increased by more than 40% during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Cases have risen by more than 100% nationally, despite tests being in short supply in many areas, and infections have doubled in the last seven days to an average of 418,000 a day, according to a Reuters tally.
In Florida, local and state officials warned that residents were waiting hours in sometimes miles-long lines just to get a test. Some accused the state health department and the governor, Ron DeSantis, of being missing in action.
“It’s every man/woman for themselves, because leadership is MIA,” tweeted state senator Shevrin Jones.
Evidence suggests Omicron is a more mild if highly infectious variant. But it “will still do terrible damage among the unvaccinated in both the US and worldwide”, according to the New York Times.
1 million new cases USA!!!! Only if this one million wear gloves, otherwise demand stable...amble of supplies which lead to no increase of ASP. We ourselves dont wear gloves when we are sick, how to expect ASP to shoot up??
Children are hospitalized with Covid at record numbers
Some younger patients are found to be Covid-positive through routine screening, but a worrisome number are experiencing severe complications of the coronavirus, doctors say.
The number of children hospitalized with Covid-19 is soaring nationwide, especially as the highly transmissible omicron variant of the coronavirus spreads across the country.
Hospitals in NSW are much closer to capacity due to surging Covid cases than is being admitted by officials, warn doctors and nurses, with one saying the system has “never been this bad”.
One senior specialist said “even the most routine urgent treatment” was already being cancelled to divert resources to Covid. “People will die,” he said.
Privately, though, doctors and nurses who are not authorised to speak publicly say the health system is close to capacity.
“No way will the health system cope,” said the senior specialist. “It’s never been this bad.”
The senior doctor said the focus on staff shortages overlooked the issue that all the state’s major hospitals were rapidly approaching bed capacity. At the current rate “every single bed will only be for Covid patients … it doesn’t matter how many staff they call back”.
“People are turning up really unwell,” she said. “They are staying 40, 50, 60 hours” in emergency wards while they wait for capacity to be made available.
BLOOMBERG JANUARY 4, 2022 12:38 AM EST More than a million people in the U.S. were diagnosed with Covid-19 on Monday as a tsunami of omicron swamps every aspect of daily American life.
The highly mutated variant drove U.S. cases to a record, the most — by a large margin — that any country has ever reported since the pandemic began more than two years ago. Monday’s number is almost double the previous record of about 590,000 set just four days ago in the U.S., which itself was a doubling from the prior week.
U.S. reports over 1 million new daily Covid cases as omicron surges
The U.S. reported a record number of new Covid cases on Monday, with over 1 million new infections.
A total of 1,082,549 new coronavirus cases were reported Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, as the highly infectious omicron variant continues to spread throughout the country and beyond.
The U.S. also has the highest seven-day average of new cases in the world, according to Johns Hopkins rankings.
France detects new COVID-19 variant 'IHU', more infectious than Omicron: All we know about it
The new variant — B.1.640.2 — which has been detected in 12 patients near Marseille, contains 46 mutations, making it more resistant to vaccines and infectious
Even as the world battles the uptick in COVID-19 cases owing to the Omicron variant, scientists in France have found another variant.
The discovery of the variant, dubbed B.1.640.2, was announced in a paper posted on medRxiv.
Called IHU, as of now, the strain was discovered by academics based at the IHU Mediterranee Infection on 10 December.
Covid Level in Singapore 'Unknown,' U.S. CDC Warns in Travel Notice
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday reclassified its Covid-19 travel advisory for Singapore, guiding Americans to avoid travel to the Southeast Asian nation because the level of the disease there is “unknown.”
“Because the current situation in Singapore is unknown, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants,” the CDC said in its advisory.
On Tuesday, 112,941 Americans were hospitalized with Covid-19, according to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The new figure far exceeds peak hospitalizations during the Delta variant surge -- nearly 104,000 in early September. It's also creeping toward the pandemic-high number of Covid-19 patients hospitalized in a single day -- 142,246, on January 14 of last year.
"Unfortunately, this is the consequence of a highly transmissible variant, the Omicron variant," US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told CNN on Tuesday.
Now, more hospital intensive care units are nearing capacity.
Singapore’s COVID-19 weekly infection growth rate back above 1 for first time since Nov 12
SINGAPORE: The weekly growth rate of COVID-19 infections in Singapore went above 1 on Tuesday (Jan 4) for the first time since Nov 12, 2021, data from the Ministry of Health's (MOH) website showed.
The weekly infection growth rate refers to the ratio of community cases for the past week over the week before. Authorities have described the statistic as one of the key indicators that can be used to assess risk levels when calibrating COVID-19 measures.
New York COVID hospitalizations surpassed the 10,000-mark and then some Tuesday, totaling their highest levels since early May 2020 as new estimates released by the CDC estimate omicron's regional prevalence to be as high as 99%.
There's nothing misleading about the skyrocketing statewide hospitalization numbers, however. Statewide hospitalizations stood at 10,411 as of Tuesday, the highest total since since April 30, 2020, when the total was 10,993. The level of increase over the last two days alone (1,638), for comparative purposes, is just 238 admissions shy of the total hospitalized statewide exactly three months ago.
And the count is expected to climb further, with this latest viral wave, as one Manhattan emergency room doctor put it this week, "making people really sick in a different way" than prior waves did.
More than half of all COVID patients hospitalized statewide are in New York City, which has the second-highest adult full vaccination rate (84.1%) of the state's 10 regions behind only Long Island (86.5%). Yet both regions, once again impaired by their density compared with others, find themselves atop COVID impact charts.
