Another FINE YOUNG TALENT in star-studded PKR - Akmal Nasir
A funny thing happened to Akmal Nasir on his way to becoming an actuary. He shook the hand of a young American senator in Madison, Wisconsin, when he took a day off studying at the University of Wisconsin in the United States.
Nine years on, the senator whose hand Akmal shook is into his second term as the 44th President of the United States of America.
Akmal was never to work as an actuary. Today, he is director of Malaysia’s National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) Centre, co-ordinator of the siasatPRU13 team, and head of opposition party PKR’s internship programme.
He had been among those instrumental in uncovering the scandal of the National Feedlot Centre in 2011 that was run by the family of Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil who eventually left her ministerial post.
“You could say America was my political awakening,” Akmal told The Malay Mail Online while on a private visit to Melbourne.
The ambition and where Akmal ended up are not as divergent as might be imagined though.
On finishing Form Five in Malay College, Kuala Kangsar, the intent of the Johor Baru-born boy from Sekolah Menengah Johor Baru was to help his nation.
“There was a lack of actuaries in the country,” Akmal said, after meeting Malaysians at a forum organised by Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia (SABM) Melbourne recently. “The insurance industry was at a critical moment, lacking in expertise on how to cover risk.”
Akmal figured there might have been no more than 100 actuaries in the country at the time.
He had a head for figures so after completing a preparatory year at Mara College, Shah Alam, he was off on scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The university was ranked one of Top 20 in the world by Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University.
Akmal completed his double degree in actuarial science and economics in four years. In that time, he also read widely: politics, philosophy, practical economic theories, ways to improve society.
“My purpose shifted,” said Akmal. “My personal goal had been to become an actuary. It dawned on me that being an actuary was closer associated with corporate goals.”
In truth the purpose remained; to help his nation. It was the goalpost that had shifted. “There were more urgent matters in society issues than financial ones,” said Akmal.
It was at that time that the young black senator from Illinois, Barack Obama, was starting to turn heads in the political establishment in Washington.
“I looked up to him,” Akmal said, his eyes glinting in the spring sunshine.
When Obama came to town in the run-up to the Democratic National Convention of July 2004, Akmal was pushing his way through the throng.
“I got to shake his hand,” said Akmal of the then 42-year-old senator who was to go on to gain national attention with his keynote address at the Democratic convention.
The handshake was to be as momentous an occasion as Akmal’s return to Malaysia in 2009, after Malaysia’s 12th General Election.
He put in a call to the office of Malay College senior Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, then a first-term Selangor state assemblyman for Seri Setia, and went on to work with NOW founder Rafizi Ramli, who is now a Member of Parliament for Pandan and strategy director of PKR.
But Akmal does not see himself as a politician. “I am a backroom person, working in support of others,” he said.
Still, one could say he is finally fulfilling his purpose. To help the nation.

Another blow for Mukhriz as Sungai Limau rejects Barisan Nasional
**** see this...For instance, even though the BN Federal Government had scrapped the 34 sen sugar subsidy at the national level supposedly to deal with rising diabetes cases, sugar was sold at RM1 per kilogram at its Sungai Limau carnivals.
In other parts of the country, sugar is sold at RM2.84 per kg.
And although a 5-kg bag of rice was sold at RM5 in these carnivals, which took place in the PAS bastion of Bukit Besar, it failed to “buy votes” in Sungai Limau. - November 4, 2013.
PAS’s victory in the Sungai Limau by-election was a second loss for Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir in less than a month.
Before he led the Barisan Nasional charge to unseat PAS from the latter’s bastion of Sungai Limau, Mukhriz had vied for one of three coverted Umno vice-president’s seat in the party polls.
Mukhriz, a former Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, however, came in fourth behind Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein.
In the Sungai Limau by-election, Mukhriz threw himself into the campaign from the start.
He stayed in the constituency of mostly padi farmers and fishermen throughout the campaign, sometimes even spending the night on the floor of villagers’ homes.
He personally took the reins of the Umno machinery and even roped in his father and much-loved son of Kedah, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to help persuade voters to give BN a chance.
The Sungai Limau state seat has been with PAS in the past five elections.
If in previous by-elections a beaming portrait of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak would accompany the BN candidate’s own portrait, this time, that space was occupied by a smiling picture of Mukhriz.
PAS retained Sungai Limau even though its candidate Mohd Azam Abdul Samad polled a smaller majority compared with the outcome in the last general election.
Mohd Azam, a former assistant principal of SMK Agama An Nahdzah, Bukit Besar, won with a majority of 1,084 votes compared with the 2,774 votes garnered by the late Tan Sri Azizan Razak on May 5.
Mohd Azam’s victory over former Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris lecturer Dr Sohaimi Lazim was a sweet one for PAS after it had lost control of the state on May 5.
Even with a reduced majority, PAS succeeded in defending the seat from a spirited BN onslaught which had used agencies from the state and Federal Government in the campaign period.
The victory was especially sweet for newly-appointed PAS commissioner Datuk Mahfuz Omar, who took over the reins from the late Azizan.
It would be a feather in Mahfuz’s cap when he defends his vice-president’s post in the PAS party elections from November 22 to 24.
BN’s loss also meant that the huge crowds at its Karnival Rakyat programmes all over the constituency did not translate into votes for the coalition.
It only served to drain the BN’s campaign funds when groceries such as sugar, rice and Milo were sold at bargain prices at the carnivals.
For instance, even though the BN Federal Government had scrapped the 34 sen sugar subsidy at the national level supposedly to deal with rising diabetes cases, sugar was sold at RM1 per kilogram at its Sungai Limau carnivals.

We face robberies We face snatch thieves We face house break-ins We face low salaries We face cari makan susah overall To top it off, we face sugar naik harga to improve our sex life. NOW we face authorities extortion by planting mosquito larve???
We know all these bad "cari makan" enforcement habits have been passed down from one generation to another generation. C'mon lah, too obviouslah! Next time try to plant a crocodile... just something different to tickle our funny bones......HUH?
C'mon lah! Govt enforcement officers, why need to abuse your power to victimize ordinary Malaysians anymore? We have enough stress already lah! You need to eat, we need to eat too.
Something is really wrong with some of our Govt servants???
Taniah kepada Calon PAS, Mohd Azam Abd Samat, memperoleh undi sebanyak 12,069, manakala calon Barisan Nasional (BN) Dr Ahmad Sohaimi Lazim pula memperoleh undi sebanyak 10,985, sekaligus menyaksikan PAS menang dengan majoriti sebanyak 1,084.
Another blow for Mukhriz as Sungai Limau rejects Barisan Nasional
LOL
Another blow for Mukhriz's daddy too from his own backyard! LMHOROTF
Before bi-election, Dr M promised Sungai Limau voters that he will make sure Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir does a good job for the people in the constituency, but only if they choose Barisan Nasional (BN) in the by-election tomorrow.....
Dr M also said an elected representative who was close to the BN state government would get more assistance not only from the state but also from the Federal Government. He urged voters to make the right decision by choosing the BN candidate.
We believe the ordinary Malaysian folks in Sg Limau sent a strong message -
A good Menteri Besar DOES NOT need his daddy to tell him to do a good job for the constituency. And they rather have an elected representative take less assistance from the State Govt and the Fed Govt THAN an elected representative who is that "close" to BN State Govt.
“What the Prime Minister is telling the world is that while it is hunky-dory to make the glamorous pitch for moderation at international platforms, moderation takes a back seat to peace and harmony domestically.” ~ Tony Pua
