The next generation of WiFi (8), the IEEE 802.11bn standard is set to up the ante when it comes to wireless connectivity, making reliability a key priority rather than just hitting a new high in the speed race. However, the rollout of WiFi 8 is not expected before 2028.

While the most optimistic pundits are already talking about theoretical data rates of up to 100 Gbps, ie, twice the highest speed of WiFi 7, the main aim of this new standard will be to make wireless connections as reliable as possible, regardless of the number of devices connected simultaneously.

With its focus on stability and intelligent spectrum management, WiFi 8 is designed to respond to the proliferation of demands for connections, from high-definition streaming to online games and even virtual reality. The major innovation will therefore lie in the ability of the WiFi standard to maintain constant signal quality, even in situations where it is most in demand.

This is known as "Ultra High Reliability” (UHR). WiFi 8 also promises better latency, which is crucial in particular for video games and virtual and/or augmented reality.

Rollout is expected in 2028 in an optimal scenario. WiFi 8 will be backward-compatible with its predecessors, allowing for older and newer devices to communicate but global equipment upgrades will be necessary to fully take advantage of its benefits.

Information about WiFi 8 is just starting to filter through; meanwhile WiFi 7 is a technology full of promise that is only now starting to be deployed on a widespread basis. The first compatible devices appeared in 2024, but it will be a few years before this new standard is widely adopted.

To enjoy the benefits of WiFi 7, you need a compatible router. It's advisable to choose the latest devices and check their compatibility with this standard before buying.
