Muhyiddin Yassin has been dropped as deputy prime minister in the latest cabinet reshuffle unveiled by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak this afternoon.
Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been named as the new number two and would also retain the home ministry portfolio.
Speculation had been rife that Muhyiddin, who is also Umno deputy president, would be axed due to his critical remarks regarding the 1MDB imbroglio.
Also axed is another vocal critic of 1MDB Mohd Shafie Apdal.
The Umno vice-president from Sabah was the rural and regional development minister.
A new appointment to the cabinet is Salleh Said Keruak, who is the current Sabah state assembly speaker.
The staunch Najib supporter, who often defends the prime minister on his blog, is the new communication and multimedia minister.
He replaces Ahmad Shabery Cheek who would now oversee the agriculture and agro-based industry portfolio.
Najib was flanked by Zahid when the new cabinet announcement was made at the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya.

Shortly after the Black 505 rallies following the 13th Malaysian General Election due to claims of electoral fraud and vote manipulation, he has reportedly said that Malaysians who are unhappy with the country's political system should leave the country. This statement has raised discontentment among the citizens, putting a serious question mark over his political future in a multiracial society.[17] This statement was made after series of street demonstrations lead by opposition parties that has refused to accept the results of the 13th Malaysian General election. His first act as Home Minister was to order a crack down against opposition leaders and dissent, landing him in a bigger controversy with sedition laws being used to attempt to suppress the voices of opposition parties.[18]
During a speech in Malacca, Zahid was recorded endorsing the police policy of "shoot to kill" when arresting dangerous criminals,[19] including backing a certain group of gangsters.[20][21][22]

DPM Muhyiddin is a likeable guy. One day more than 10 years ago my sons were watching a young girl playing piano in Bangsar Shopping Complex. As I turned I saw someone who looked like DPM Muhyddin in an assuming simple white shirt. I asked, "Are you Muhyiddin?" And he nodded while we shook hands. I also saw PM Najib in the hall at a distance. Never came to my imagination that Muhiddin became DPM and Najib is PM today.
Let us pray for our Leaders that God will give them grace and guidance in these trying times.
The Bible says, "Pray for all in authority."
