KLUANG: Police have launched an investigation into allegations of government machinery misuse during the Mahkota by-election campaign, says Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar.

"Investigation papers have been opened under Section 4(A) of the Election Offences Act 1954 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, following a police report," said Kumar, who did not disclose further details about the case.

He said since the campaign began on Sept 14, two police reports had been lodged, with one leading to an active investigation.

Kumar added that police had approved 96 campaign permits for public speeches, rallies, and walkabouts.

In a separate matter, he confirmed that 18 police officers were eligible for postal voting on Sept 28.

However, five officers have yet to submit their postal vote forms, which must be handed in by Sept 27 at 4pm.

"As of 1pm today, 217 police personnel, or 57 per cent of the 401 eligible voters, have cast their early votes. The process has been smooth, with no incidents," Kumar said after visiting the Dewan Zamrud polling centre today.

Both candidates and their supporters have cooperated with enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful election process.

Today, 11 polling stations were opened for early voting, including one at Dewan Zamrud, eight at Mahkota Camp, and two at Batu Tiga Camp.

Some 4,438 military voters and their spouses are expected to cast their ballots by 5pm.
