Simplified formula for compound interest:
A = P (1+r)^t

Compounding over the long term is truly the 8th wonder of the universe.
Today, the amount P in my portfolio is an 8 figure.
Hopefully, the 9th figure will be realised sooner.

2. Calculating Returns
R = (Pf - Pi + D) / Pi

R = Rate of return
Pf = Latest market price of asset
Pi = Market price of asset when bought initially
D = Dividends (total) received

The rate of return is defined as the difference between the end of period market price of the asset and the beginning market price of the asset; and including all dividends paid by the company during the whole period; divided by the beginning market price of the asset.

You will wish to own a business with good competititve advantage for a long time. Over this long period, its intrinsic value can be expected to grow and you would have collected many years of dividends beside enjoying its expected higher market price.

Stay with good quality company, managed by honest people and buying this at a fair or bargain price; and keep almost always for a long term.

Keep investing very simple indeed.

1. Simplified formula for compound interest:
A = P (1+r)^t

A = How much money you end up with
P = The amount of money you invest
r = The annual return your money earns while invested
t = The number of years your money is invested

Rank these variables in order of their importance.
Rank these variables based on the level of control you have over each.
#1 - Number of years your money you invest
#2 - The amount of money you invest
#3 - Annual return your money earns while invested

The variable that investors have the most control over is HOW LONG THEY STAY INVESTED. Sadly, many investors sacrifice time invested (something they can control) in a futile effort to maximize returns (something they can't control).

There is a way to speed up the wealth-building process. It is not accomplished by trying to increase your investment returns. It is accomplished by focusing on the varibale that investors have the second most control of: HOW MUCH MONEY YOU INVEST.

There is only one way you can influence your annual investment returns: BY CHOOSING HOW AGGRESSIVE YOUR PORTFOLIO ALLOCATION IS. The more of your portfolio that is invested in risky assets like stocks, the higher your expected returns will be. Yes, you can influence your returns, but that is done at the beginning when you select your PORTFOLIO ALLOCATION.

SUMMARY:
It is not the return of what you invst in that matters, it is the return you are able to capture by staying invested. If that means giving up some expected returns in exchange for a level of volatility yu can stomach, then so be it.

What you choose to invest in should be boring and easy to understand.

Many pile new money into an investment after it has done well, and it usually ends badly.

PMX will be preoccupied with election issues the next months. After the state elections, hopefully, the government will be more focus on economic issues and less on political issues.
Economic issues involve growing out GDP, reducing wastages and curbing on corruptions. Hopefully, with strong focus on these for a few years, Malaysia will be able to propel forward to a brighter future.

calvintaneng suffered losses in Netx. Again, he probably suffered another loss in TSH.
Compounding losses is not a game one should follow.

A loss of 50% in a stock means having to make a gain of 100% to recover all the losses. Compounding losses like so, will mean a very long road to recover his capital, if he is skillful or lucky.

Its true, the first rule of investing is, do not lose money.

The prices of a stock can fluctuate hugely over the short term: 50% up and 1/3rd down.

Many in this contest by SSLee will be "fooled by randomness".

However, over a very long time horizon, 5 to 10 years, the stock market is a weighing machine. The price then will generally reflect the real value better.

If you are buying Berkshire Hathaway stock, be prepared for its market price volatility in the 1st, 2nd and perhaps, its 3rd year. After then, you should usually find that its market price is often or always higher then the price you paid for it.

Is PBB run by good managers with integrity? Yes.

Is PBB undervalued? The usual PE of PBB is 12 to 16: its signature PE is 14. Today, it is available at a PE less than 12.

Maintain OVERWEIGHT on the banking sector. Post results, we believe the uninspiring market sentiment provides entry opportunities into the highly resilient banking sector. Threats to the overall markets would derive from severe drags in asset quality from heightened inflationary pressures or further slowdown in domestic and global markets. Not helping either is the present weakening of the Ringgit elevating import costs. On top of its sticky earnings, the dividend yields for the banking sector have risen to an average of c.6%, which could be a meaningful consideration to long-term yield seekers.

Subject to further consideration for our upcoming 3QCY23 investment strategy, we maintain our top picks to be: (i) PBBANK as it is the leading bank in terms of GIL readings at 0.4% (vs. peer average of 1.5%) backed by a highly collateralized loans book thanks to a substantial mortgage portion (41% of total books). Meanwhile, its recent shares’ sell-down owing to uncertainties of its shareholding and ownership structure may see an inversion when clarity on the matter unfolds. We also like (ii) RHBBANK as we believe the relevancy of strong capital safety will be in the limelight once more. RHBBANK continues to lead with its CET-1 buffers (17% vs. peers’ average of 14%). On the other hand, RHBBANK’s dividend prospect is become more promising with targeted payouts of c.55% looking to generate yield of 7%-8%. Also, developments on its upcoming digital bank with Boost could support interest in the stock.

Short run

In the short term, there can be a disconnect between

- how a company performs and
- how its stock performs.

This is because a stock's market price is a function of the market's perception of the value of the future profits a company can create.

Sometimes this perception is spot on; sometimes it is way off the mark.

Long run

But over a longer period of time, the market tends to get it right, and the performance of a company's stock will mirror the performance of the underlying business.

The Voting and Weighing Machines

The father of value investing, Benjamin Graham, explained this concept by saying that in the short run, the market is like a voting machine - tallying which firms are popular and unpopular. But in the long run, the market is like a weighing machine - assessing the substance of a company.

Message

What matters in the long run is a company's actual underlying business performance and not the investing public's fickle opinion about its prospects in the short run.

The market frequently forgets the important relationship between Return on Capital and Return on Stock

Return on Capital

Return on capital is a measure of a company's profitability.

Return on Capital = Profit / Invested Capital

Return on Stock

Return on stock represents a combination of dividends and increases in the stock price (capital gains).

Stockholder Total Return = Capital Gains + Dividends

The important relationship between Return on Capital and Return on Stock

The market frequently forgets the important relationship between return on capital and return on stock.

A company can earn a high return on capital, but the shareholders could still suffer if the market price of the stock decreases over the same period.

Similarly, a terrible company with a low return on capital may see its stock price increase

- if the firm performed less terribly than the market had expected, or,
- maybe the company is currently losing lots of money, but investors have bid up its stock in anticipation of future profits.

Stocks over the long-run offer the greatest potentials return of any investment

Although long-term returns are fairly consistent, short-term returns are much volatile.

Stocks over the long-run offer the greatest potential return of any investment, but the short-run roller-coaster rides can be a nightmare for those who don't understand the market and lack a sound investment plan to cope with it.

The long-term trend of the stock market is up and its performance consistent

There is more than 200 years of U.S. stock market history and the long-term trend is up.

Over the long term, stock market performance has been rather consistent.

During any 50-year period, it provided an average after-inflation return of between 5 and 7 percent per year.

If you invested in a well-diversified basket of stocks and left them alone, the purchasing power of your investment would have doubled roughly every 12 years.

4 practical recommendations for long-term investors

1. Time horizon is not the only relevant variable in figuring out your allocation between stocks and bonds (and other asset classes). Your risk tolerance, current earnings, and career risk are all things you should consider.

2. Use conservative estimates for the equity returns you require in order to achieve your goals to account for "estimation risk."

3. Always remain cognizant of valuations -- particularly when they reach extremes (i.e., bubbles).

4. Always strive to keep your costs as low as possible; this makes an enormous differenceover time.

General

Stocks produced an average return of 10.70% during the period 1926-2000. That's a historical observation (anomaly?) and investors should absolutely not anchor on it when they think about future returns.

That specific period was atypical in a way that can be dangerously misleading if you don't look beyond the "headline" number. Stocks started out at depressed multiples (a price-to-trailing-earnings multiple of 10.2 for the S&P Composite Index) and finished at inflated ones (26.0 for the S&P 500 Index).

All told, the expansion in the multiple's girth alone fattened stocks' average return by a full 1.25 percentage points annually. Unless you have reason to believe that rising valuations will make the same contribution over your investing horizon, expecting the same average return going forward is wrongheaded.

*A more realistic landmark*

A reasonable historical benchmark with which to begin thinking about future returns is 6% to 7% after inflation. That range is consistent with the long-run stock return estimates in the 2007 edition of Jeremy Siegel's Stocks for the Long Run.

Incidentally, if you don't think a 1.25 percentage point difference is even worth trifling over, consider the end value of a dollar invested at 6.5% over a 30-year period: $6.61. At 7.75%, you'll have $9.38. If you were counting on the higher return and earned the lower one instead, you're now facing a 30% shortfall.
