Either Genting makes normal amount of profits and doesn't pay income tax for maybe 2022 + 2023... or genting makes such massive profits due to pent up demand that they end up qualifying for cukai makmur.
Well, if Genting Berhad makes so much profit in 2022 tax assessment year that they wipe out the accumulated pandemic losses and go on to trigger Cukai Makmur... I'LL TAKE THAT!!! ... I WILL GLADLY CHOOSE THAT OPTION, YES PLEASE!!!
2021-10-29 22:19 | Report Abuse
Sharefisher: NO. Tax makmur is just normal income tax, but with an extra +8% for every ringgit profiit above RM100 million. No connection with dividend whatsoever, It's just an extra tier of income tax.

"Unabsorbed business losses can be carried forward for up to a maximum of 10 consecutive years from the previous seven years."
... oh, might not make any difference. Anyhow, Genting will get to carry over their losses for their 2022 tax calculations, I think? ... any tax consultant please correct me on this.
2021-10-29 20:20 | Report Abuse
@karma4444, you are wrong. Because Genting is carrying forward so much accumulated losses from 2020 covid period, their tax deductions are going to be massive in 2022. Genting will likely be paying ZERO tax in 2022. ... If I'm not misreading how the carrying over of losses in 2020 and 2021 financial year works, at least.
2021-10-29 19:26 | Report Abuse
@karma4444, that article is wrong. What they're saying is, all companies will pay the standard tax at 24% for profit up to 100m. Anything above 100m, the excess will instead be taxed at the higher rate of 33%.
That article writer thinks that the 24% is an extra tax on top of the normal corporate tax. He is wrong. Article writer got no brain.
2021-10-29 19:17 | Report Abuse
Actually, it's not even that bad... it's an additional +8% tax on the portion of profits above RM100m.

gohkimhock, well at least it's just for one year. ... I agree with it too, actually. The part I don't agree with is that they were constantly saying there will be no windfall tax... then they pop up with this HAHA, SURPRISE!!! ... it's like when PH said no more GST, but then they put in SST which was almost the same amount.

no windfall tax, but got cukai makmur. ... WOW. This government ah... before budget announcement, so much noise about no windfall tax, but now... SURPRISE SUCKERS!!! ... Honestly, I think this is unfair of them, and cruel to glove holders.

Just got some dividends from our family palm oil company. Returns were pretty low... the current situation is, if you don't have enough workers, the high CPO price makes up for the low volume harvested. If you have enough workers, you are going to be making mega profits... Sadly, I can't tell which companies have worker problems and which don't, so I'm not investing into palm oil right now! :(
Congrats Phillip for managing your plantations well!

I don't agree with many of Phillips investment choices, and my portfolio and investment strategy are completely different. ... but saying Phillip is a crook is bullshit. Phillip is the most transparent and honest person here in his farmed portfolio. AFAIK, no one else posts their full portfolio with transaction dates and prices and amounts, in real time.
Personally, I think I'm a better investor than him, and my results are better too... but I can't/ won't prove it, because I'm not willing to divulge my transactions to the general public in the way that he does.
Look at his Serba transactions. He didn't delete them, he honestly still shows how he averaged down on his initial buy in, and then eventually cut loss... and his bad luck that immediately after he exited, Serba went up significantly higher (before crashing and eventual suspension).
Unlike for instance, KYY, who has no transparency at all, and even reports late to the SC.
...
Disclaimer: this is not an endorsement of Phillip's investment advice. In fact, as stated, I have never followed any of his tips or advice... I am simply stating that calling him a crook or dishonest is ridiculous, because he does FULL DISCLOSURE. (not the type that gets you arrested for flashing)

I have to say, I truly respect you for having a transparent portfolio which is publicaly published. ... I don't agree with a lot of your investment decisions, but your transparency is the highest I've ever seen. ... I wanted to emulate that and started a public portfolio, but... after a while I chickened out. I sometimes buy into small cap penny stocks and accidentally got into goreng stocks, and I am worried that making my holdings public will give syndicates ammo to try and flush me out! :(
Will return my portfolio publical once I dispose of these goreng stocks, but, sadly, that just looks bad, where I set it to private whenever I have something to hide and turn it back to public once I want to show off again.

you know what they say about knowing just enough to think you are right, when you are actually wrong, lol.
Well that's one problem with Malaysian counters... there's so much goreng and fudging of numbers, who knows what the state of the business actually is.
Or companies with "hidden liabilities" like AA and AAX... you think that they are solid companies which do the simple buusiness of air travel. ... then it turns out that a huge portion of the revenue was from massive contracts to buy airplanes in bulk and then re-sell them at a profit, and then when they couldn't sell them due to covid, it was the contracts with Boeing and such that are killing them.

Edge: "Earlier this year, the Edge weekly had reported that the United States was investigating Malaysian glove makers Hartalega Holdings Bhd and a unit of Supermax Corp over allegations of forced labour."
... weird, since, from what I heard, Hartalega has one of the best treatment of foreign workers among any of the rubber glove companies. ... CBP appears to be on a vendetta against Malaysia lately...
... and if CBP is on a Malaysian Vendetta, then the plantation stocks aren't safe either.
Disclaimer: I have absolutely no idea what the CBP is actually going to do. Same for Serba Dinamik, I have no idea what will result from the investigation. The counters might skyrocket, they might crash, so, IMHO, buying into these counters is high risk high reward

I just called up Genting. Bleh. Still no due date on Skyworlds. Wanted to go check it out. And their hq in wisma genting is apparently still in work from home mode, wanted to call up investor relations but no answer. BLEH.
... I honestly have no idea what sort of reception the theme park is going to get. Honestly, it looks good, but rather on the small side. Personally, I feel that instead of building it on the old theme park, Genting should have done what Disney California did and bought up a massive amount of nearby empty land and landbanked it for expansion into a major large sized attraction. Land is expensive in SG too, but universal studios there is HUGE.
Anyhow, I want to check it out as soon as possible... I'd like to know what exactly I've invested in!

I was quiet for a while because I was in mourning for Yokohama IR. ... As I said at the time though, I didn't think it would happen. Hayashi had poor chance of winning, and honestly I think Melco had positioned itself better than Genting. But, fortunatly, it seems that smart money agreed with me and it was already priced in. Oh well.
But, yeah, SSP, if it had gone thru, I think Genting would have gone limit up. Maybe double/triple limit up. As I said, Yokohama IR was a big deal. It's the one which got away. Sigh...
2021-08-23 11:58 | Report Abuse
Yeah, market already expected that hayashi would lose. She wasn't even close.
As for Japan IR, nope, there were 4 prefectures bidding for 3 IR licenses, and now that Yokohama is out, the other 3 will get it, so Genting dreams of IR in Japan is out. (submission period for all the IRs is already over)
I thought Genting might drop, but, as I said, this was the expected result, so market isn't reacting.
As for why we were so keen on Yokohama, it would have been a casino monopoly in one of the highest population cities in the world, and full of rich Asians that like gambling, of course it would have been a money printing press. ... oh well, guess it wasn't meant to be. So, we'll never know what might have happened...

@emsvsi data is obviously flawed. 106% have had at least 1 dose? then why are there so many people in klang valley who haven't gotten their first dose yet? ... database error.
there's still over 8k daily covid cases in Klang Valley, and over 80% of them are unvaccinated, so there's obviously still a PLENTY of people who haven't been vaccinated.
...
But, anyhow, hilariously, hairdressers and barbers already reopen, so you are right about the reopening. ... I would not dare go to a barber though, scary!
...
Fair and honest opinion here: Genting will bounce back once the pandemic is over. ... but during this pandemic, they're going to bleed. ... Even after the economy reopens, I'm not going to be going to Genting until it looks SAFE to do so. ... which looks to be a long way off from now.
Anyhow, for now, just sit back, be patient, and above all STAY SAFE. And when the pandemic is over, it'll be happy days.

@emsvsi America doesn't need booster shots lol.
Quote: "In recent weeks, one piece of data has gotten a lot of attention: 99.5% of all the people dying from COVID-19 in the U.S. are unvaccinated."
... anti vaxxers are not going to get ANY shots, much less the booster shots.
So, yeah, America is going to have high cases regardless of the booster shot program. ... as against that, looks like the guys who are vaccinated are pretty safe... booster shot would just make them even safer.
Even in Malaysia:
"In a statement yesterday, he said a total of 449 Covid-19 fatalities had been reported as of Sunday, with 429 or 94.6 per cent of the deaths involving those who had not been vaccinated.
“From the total deaths, 21 of them (4.7 per cent) only received the first dose when they were found positive, while three deaths (0.7 per cent) have received both doses before they were found positive within 14 days from the date of their last dose.
“This means that Sarawak did not record any deaths due to Covid-19 among individuals who have completed their Covid-19 immunisation (at least 14 days after receiving the complete doses),” he said."
...
The world will bounce back even stronger post covid, because of Darwin Awards style process of elimination: "covid will mainly kill off the dumb anti vaccers"

@destinyL, oh it is HUGE. not just being one of the first full casinos, but it would be one of the only 3 casinos. So it's got like a monopoly in that area.
Comparing, Yokohama IR would be like if Genting got a license to open an Integrated Resort Casino in the middle of Kuala Lumpur. And they are informed no one else gets a casino within 100km of it, for the foreseeable future.
RWLV is like if Genting got a license to open a casino in Melaka Town, but 20 other companies also got to open casinos right next to it.
Yokohama is a bigger, more active city, and the fact that it would have a monopoly is HUGE. So yeah, I really really hope that Genting gets it.
Having said that, I don't think their chances are that good, so... hmmm. Gonna think of it as a lottery ticket, if they don't get it, expected, if they get it, HURRAY!!!!
2021-08-16 17:17 | Report Abuse
yeah, I basically priced in genting NOT getting Yokohama. If they actually somehow get it, I'll treat it as a fat juicy bonus.
Same for the insurance claims in USA, it's a huge claim, and I think they have a decent chance to get it, but I'm not pricing it in.
Same for their investments into medical research.
Well, hoping that they get everything, but I'm prepared that they get nothing. Oh well.

Well, if an anti IR mayor gets it, then no IR in Yokohama for now.
If Hayashi gets it, then IR is on, and it's between Genting and Melco. I noticed that Melco owns the Yokohama football team though, what a master stroke there. ... so, honestly, I don't think Genting's chances of getting it are that good.

@investmalaysia7777, eh, I'm not worried about my holdings in Genting for the long term... my main concern now is that I don't want my friends and family to catch covid... you can make a lot of money, but what good is it if you are DEAD?
Genting has over RM 20 billion cash reserves, so they can survive even if they keep bleeding 1b per quarter for the next couple of years... ... ... but if covid continues for the next couple of years, everything else will die, like our airlines, tourism, etc etc, which would eventually kill genting and every other industry too. So, yeah, either the pandemic ends within a reasonable timeframe, and Genting bounces back, or it keeps going on and Genting is one of the last few survivors but dies along with everything else, ie, Doomsday scenario.
At the moment, Genting has Net Assets Per Share of RM8.50... which means that, worst come to worst, Genting just closes shop, sells off all it's assets, and the shareholders collect back RM8.50 per person. ... or maybe RM6 considering they won't get the best prices on asset sales.
... so yeah, covid is my concern now, not in terms of share market, but in terms of "are my friends and family going to catch it?" ... we live in selangor, where EVERY DAY, 1 out of 1000 people is covid positive. multiply that by 1 month, and looking at the number of people close to me, and the probability of one of us catching covid is disgustingly high. SCARY.
...
Seriously. Money doesn't matter if you're DEAD. ... well, you can afford a room in a private hospital if you get serious covid I guess...

So, yeah, not so smart.
Actually, the next upcoming event will be the Yokohama elections. We shall see if Yokohama IR is happening or not based on who gets elected as mayor.

Stocksafeplayer. I think most glovers made a ton of money on gloves. For instance, my good friend had some Top Glove that he had bought really cheap after the Aspion scandal was announced. Equivalent (pre split) to around RM1.50 per share. He took my advice and sold half at RM9 (i told him to sell all though), and the remainder at RM6. ... but if he had held his shares until now, even at the current price, he would have more than doubled his initial investment. And that's not including dividends.
... As for those guys who bought in at RM9, well, my condolences.
...
But similiar case for Genting. Those who bought Genting above RM12 and holding til now, are facing massive losses. ... those who bought Genting below RM3 a while back are happy though.
...
Long term fundamentally, Gloves and Genting are both solid industries, with good long term prospects. ... it's more a matter of "buy low, sell high".

Well, that's an extreme example though.
Anyhow, the current trend is a good sign. For Klang Valley anyway.
As for opening up of economy, that's a very controversial subject, and I see plenty of people screaming to loosen SOPs, and plenty of people screaming to tighten up SOPs.

@phillip well, yes, serba's revenue from petronas should be accurate. What is unsure is that 15% profit margin on the RM400m... for all we know, it might be only 10% or 5% profit on it.
... Overall though? I think your decision to buy in at 33c isn't too bad. The downside is losing 33c if it totally goes to zero. Upside is that all this is cleared up, it goes back above RM1, and you make over 66c, over 200% profit.
I think the problem here though is what someone else mentioned... that your followers might get burnt badly.
See, for yourself, I notice that your position sizing is very good. Even is serba goes wrong, it's only a portion of your portfolio, and ON AVERAGE, you will make significantly more gains than your losses, and you get solid gains over a long term period of time.
The trouble is, some punters are going to read your blog and go "aha! time to sai lang all in serba at 33c! ... heck, I'll play contra and buy more than I can affod to pay up!"
Now, I realize, that you did not, and have not actually made any buy calls on it. You just informed us what you did. And I commend you, because I myself tend to make buy calls every now and then (and I've been lucky not to be mistaken so far, recently!).
To be fair though, you did say earlier that, you have considered and taken into account the possibility that you are wrong and the fraud is real, and you are prepared for any losses that result.
Still... despite all that, this is probably still going to be a very polarizing event, where, either you are right and people will lavish praise on you for helping them make a huge killing, or you are wrong, and people will curse you as they are victims of a huge mass killing.
Kudos to you on your transparency, and I agree, you have the most transparent portfolio that I've seen, I don't see how people can dare compare you to KYY who keeps telling people to buy even as he is merrily disposing of all his shares. ... I personally would not touch serba with a 10 foot pole, but I can see how it has decent odds. But as far as transparency goes, you are undeniably honest.
...
Actually, you know what? They don't deserve you putting in the effort, and they should do it themselves, but heck, just to shut them up, why don't you do a separate post which lists your serba, kpower, scib, etc, all those transactions, and let them know exactly how much your current paper losses are after deducting all those times you took profit. Again, they should do it themselves, but, heck, just to prove a point...
