Ericsson sees RM16b 5G revenue for telecoms service providers in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 13): The total projected value of 5G-enabled digitalisation revenues in Malaysia will be approximately RM33 billion by 2030, and of this, up to RM16 billion or almost half can be addressed by telecoms service providers, said Ericsson in a report study.

It recently shared its '5G for business: a 2030 market compass' report, that analyses the 5G business opportunity coming from industrial digitalisation across 10 key industries.

With 5G deployments now being underway across most geographies, the report is based on a new iteration of its market research on how to realise the 5G industry digitalisation business potential.

“Viewed across the region of Southeast Asia and Oceania, the largest addressable value for telecom service providers in 2030 is expected in sectors like healthcare (US$9 billion), manufacturing (US$8 billion), energy & utilities (US$5 billion), and automotive (US$5 billion), followed by public safety (US$4 billion) and media & entertainment (US$4 billion)."

Head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Todd Ashton, says the introduction of 5G will further boost the digitalisation and growth of new industrial sectors and revenue streams.

“Ericsson has been in Malaysia for over 50 years. We want to reiterate our commitment to Malaysia as the country gets ready for its 5G journey.

“We will continue to work with our partners both from the industry and academia, the Malaysian Government and other key stakeholders to bring our world-leading technology to Malaysia,” said Ashton.

Ericsson has played a leading role in rolling out 2G, 3G and 4G networks in Malaysia, and started working towards 5G in Malaysia as early as 2015.

Ericsson launched the country’s first Innovation Centre for 5G (IC5G), in partnership with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

In 2017, Ericsson partnered with Celcom to conduct the first 5G trial for Malaysia.

“This year we showcased the first 5G powered holographic communication in Malaysia and a 5G-enabled self-driving car, providing a glimpse into a future enabled by 5G,” said Ashton.

(stock code: 0032) sustained a rebound on Friday and looked set to return to a positive trend.

The stock gapped up at the opening bell with the onset of rapidly growing momentum. The share price met the short-term 14- and 21-day simple moving averages (SMA) and was on the verge of returning above a two-month positive trend line that had been formed between August and October this year. A bullish crossing of the said resistances would signal further gains for the stock, whose outlook has turned convincingly bullish.


Friday’s performance triggered a “buy” signal in the slow-stochastic momentum index as the percent K oscillator crossed higher than the percent D oscillator.

The index had fallen to oversold conditions prior to the reversal, which saw it rise to neutral territory at 26 points.

The 14-day relative strength index has also returned from oversold conditions, and is currently growing higher at 49 points.

The daily moving average convergence/divergence line remains in positive territory, suggesting that the decline was not enough to pull it into a negative trend. However, it remains below the signal line, a positive crossing of which would signal the resumption of bullish momentum.

Should the current pick-up in momentum be sustained on continued buying interest, the stock will be looking at a resistance of 61 sen, which represents its recent high.

A breach of this hurdle would signal the continuation of the ascending trend, while failure to do so could see the stock return to a consolidation channel.

To the lower end of the chart, the 50-day SMA is straddling a support level of 51 sen. A negative crossing of the support would suggest that sentiment for the stock has turned negative.

Further support can be found at 49.5 sen, which could offer a rebound before the 50-day moving average is convincingly breached.

Now let Calvin tells you his experience from REAL LIFE

In years 2007 to 2008 I bought Opcom. After buying 10,000 shares Opcom at

Rm1.00 each for RM10,000 it crashed to my horror all the way to 30 sen

But knowing that Malaysia is in its infancy regarding fiber optic future I bought all the way down till I had a total of 400,000 shares with average price around 40 sen to 45 sen

Then Opcom rebounded to 40 sen, still below my buying price 45 sen (after averaging from 10 lots to 400 lots)

Suddenly one day Opcom jumped from 42 sen to 48 sen above my holding cost of 45 sen. So I got itchy and sold a little at 47 sen to 48 sen (I didn't know why Opcom spiked up)

Next day Opcom announced Rm359 Millions Job award from Telekom
