Boris Johnson will hold a Downing Street omicron briefing at 5pm this afternoon, amid warnings that there could soon be 2,000 national Covid hospitalisations a day.
The press conference comes after a top UK health official said the omicron Covid variant is “probably the most significant threat” faced since the start of the pandemic.
In the UK, Dr Paul Burton, chief medical officer at Moderna, has been speaking to MPs on the Commons science and technology committee.
Burton said he expects data in the coming days to show how well the Moderna booster improves protection against the Omicron variant.
He cautioned against claims, largely from South Africa, that the variant is causing milder disease, and warned that Omicron and Delta are likely to circulate together for some time.
“I do not think Omicron is a milder, less severe version of the current virus,” he told the committee.
He added:
The idea it will push Delta out of the way and take over may occur in the future, but I think in the coming months these two viruses are going to co-exist, and Omicron, which I would maintain is actually a severe disease, will now infect people on a background of very, very strong Delta pressure.
It will also lead to a situation where individuals will become co-infected … which gives the opportunity for this virus to further evolve and mutate which is a concerning and worrying situation.
We certainly don’t have to panic, we have many many tools at our disposal, we’ve learnt so much about this virus over the last two years, and we can continue to fight it, but I think Omicron poses a real threat.
When you look at the data in SA about 15% of people who are hospitalised are in the intensive care unit, and while there’s variability, if you look back earlier in the year, at a time of delta surge in August, those numbers are about the same, 15%.
So while the mortality rate we are seeing right now is mercifully lower, I think as a disease it is a very fit virus and it’s severe.
Since Sinovac does not provide protection against Omicron, China will be testing its population. China will run out of gloves and will import from Malaysia. ASP will begin to rise.
Strong rally glove stocks continue towards end of the year as Omicron variant spread like wildfire in US and European countries and coming Christmas and New Year holidays will cause super spike of cases and hospitalisations in January and coming few months
The U.K. reported a record number of new daily Covid cases on Wednesday, with 78,610 in the last 24 hours.
The figure was an increase from 59,610 the day before, and underlines the dramatic surge in infections that the country is seeing ahead of the Christmas holiday period.
Chinese companies listed on Wall Street will likely to be cut off from U.S. capital markets in the next three years as tensions between Beijing and Washington persist, according to David Loevinger from the TCW Group. He predicted that by 2024, most Chinese companies listed on U.S. exchanges are no longer going to be listed in the United States. Many of China’s top internet companies listed in the U.S. have already undertaken dual listings in Hong Kong. Some high-profile names include e-commerce giant Alibaba, its rival JD.com, search engine giant Baidu, gaming firm NetEase and social media giant Weibo.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this month finalized rules to implement a law that would allow the market regulator to ban foreign companies listed in the U.S. from trading if their auditors do not comply with requests for information from American regulators.
The law was passed in 2020 after Chinese regulators repeatedly denied requests from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board to inspect the audits of Chinese firms that list and trade in the United States.
Given the current level of distrust between the U.S. and Chinese governments, and with the bilateral relationship unlikely to improve anytime soon, there is “no way we are going to solve this in the next few years,” Loevinger said.
When a company delists from an exchange like the Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exchange, it loses access to a broad pool of buyers, sellers and intermediaries.
So very soon there will be increase in trade tariffs on China's goods exported into the US, including China gloves. Malaysian Gloves will be preferred and this will boost sales of gloves from Malaysia. ASP will also rise.
A new super-variant could be created if Omicron and Delta infect someone at the same time, one of Moderna's bosses has warned.
Covid infections normally only involve one mutant strain, but in extremely rare cases two can strike at the same time.
If these also infect the same cell, they may be able to swap DNA and combine to make a new version of the virus.
Dr Paul Burton, the vaccine maker's chief medical officer, warned the high numbers of Delta and Omicron cases currently circulating in Britain made this more likely.
India and Brazil are already experiencing an increase in daily new cases - India jumping from 5000+ to 8000+ and Brazil from 2000+ to 5000+. in just over 2 days.
They were badly hid by the Delta Variant and now looks like by the Omicron Variant.
we already knew about the high transmissibility rate of Omicron. But its useless for glove industry because it cause much milder symptoms than delta. thats why ASP remains low, glove stocks keep crashing. lol
COVID: Omicron variant spreading at unprecedented rate, says WHO
The World Health Organization has warned that the coronavirus variant Omicron was spreading at a rate not seen with previous strains and was likely present in most countries.
‘We’re heartbroken. We’re overwhelmed’ — U.S. hospitals grapple with delta outbreak as omicron takes root.
Public health officials have warned for weeks that the U.S. would face another Covid wave due to the delta variant this winter.
The detection of omicron in at least 25 states has raised concern that the variant could lead to an additional infection wave if it proves even more contagious.
“In the weeks to come with omicron, what we’ve got here might be a perfect storm,” said Dr. Barbara Sattkamp Taylor, an expert on infectious disease at UT Health San Antonio.
The world is not out of the woods yet as long as there are new variants mutating out there. Like what the Singapore govt said, we have no other choice but to live with covid
Covid cases in South Africa have surpassed its highest peak ever with 37k cases but only 20 death cases compare to last peak 27k cases but 800+ deaths...omicron is really mild..In fact, according to J&J study in S.Africa there are 0 death cases related with Omicron, its like Omicron is natural vaccines being distributed by God to the whole population to build immunity. The faster Omicron being spread the better to overtake Delta which is more dangerous
The advocates of OBM have bitten the dust now... on the other hand , the non-OBM is doing much better than OBM now as it clearly shows...
Eventually, the OBM has to give in in terms of its pricing associated with Brand. Where supply is more than demand, pricing has to come down no matter how branded your products are unless of course your product is of one kind of exclusiveness but a glove is a glove....
Complacency is dangerous as Chris Whitty appears fed up with suggestions Omicron is milder A lot hangs on the government's Plan B restrictions but many scientists fear the plan is full of holes that give the virus opportunities to go on spreading, putting hospitals under pressure.
