PUTRAJAYA, April 3 — Malaysia is prepared to negotiate with China over the South China Sea dispute, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the issue was raised at the four-eyed meeting he had with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his official visit to China being that the national oil and gas company, Petronas, has the largest platform for oil exploration operating in the area
China is also staking claim over the area. I said as a small country that needs oil and gas resources, we have to continue, but if the condition is that there must be negotiations, then we are ready to negotiate,” he said when speaking at the Prime Minister’s Monthly Assembly with Staff of the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM) here today.

Malaysia open to talks with Beijing over dispute in South China Sea — PM TheEdge Mon, Apr 03, 2023 01:34pm - 39 minutes
KUALA LUMPUR (April 3): Malaysia is prepared to negotiate with China over a dispute between them in the South China Sea, state news agency Bernama reported on Monday (April 3), citing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
China claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, through which about US$3 trillion (RM13.3 trillion) worth of ship-borne trade passes annually. Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have some overlapping claims.
The issue was raised at a meeting between Anwar and Chinese President Xi Jinping in China last week as Malaysia has energy exploration projects in the area, Bernama cited Anwar as saying at an address on Monday at the prime minister's department.
Bernama did not specify which dispute or which area of the South China Sea Anwar was referring to.
"China is also staking claim over the area. I said as a small country that needs oil and gas resources, we have to continue, but if the condition is that there must be negotiations, then we are ready to negotiate," Anwar said.
China's has staked its claim to about 90% of the South China Sea via a U-shaped "nine-dash line" on its maps that was declared invalid in 2016 by an international arbitration ruling, which Beijing does not recognise.
Efforts by other Southeast Asian countries to negotiate with China or jointly conduct energy activities have failed to make breakthroughs.
Malaysian state oil company Petronas operates several oil and gas fields in the South China Sea within its 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone.
Chinese vessels have in recent years passed by or lingered near Petronas operations, prompting protests from Malaysia.
In 2021, Malaysia summoned the Chinese ambassador to express its protest against the "encroachment" into its waters by Beijing's vessels. In 2020,

The Prime Minister said he had conveyed this “sensitive issue” to Chinese President Xi Jinping during his official visit to China last week.
“As PETRONAS has one of its biggest oil platforms in the South China Sea, the revenue is important for Malaysia.
“However, as China is claiming that it has rights to it, I am willing to sit down and discuss, but as we are a small country dependent on the revenue, we will continue to assert our rights to it,” Anwar said at April’s monthly meeting between the Prime Minister and the staff of the Prime Minister’s Office here yesterday. While Anwar did not name the specific block of the sea that is being contested, he was most likely referring to the tensions revolving around the development of the Kasawari gas field in the South China Sea in Block SK316, off Sarawak.
PETRONAS Carigali, a wholly owned subsidiary of the national oil company, is the developer and operator of the Kasawari gas field.
First discovered in 2011, Kasawari has been under development for several years, and is estimated to hold about three trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas resources.
Scheduled to come on-stream this year, Kasawari is expected to produce up to 900 million cubic feet of gas per day.
Over the past few years, Beijing has been persistent in challenging its neighbours’ oil and gas activities within their own exclusive economic zones in the South China Sea.
All Malaysians will behind DSAI and Unity to defense our Tanah Malaysia, the gas field thousand miles away from CCP land. This prove evil axis is a threat to the world.
China open to dialogue with Malaysia on South China Sea, says foreign ministry TheEdge Tue, Apr 04, 2023 03:40pm - 48 minutes
BEIJING (April 4): China would like to work with Malaysia to handle differences in the South China Sea through dialogue and consultation in an appropriate manner, its foreign ministry said on Tuesday (April 4).
Malaysia Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said earlier on Tuesday that he had told the Chinese government that an exploration project by state energy firm Petronas in the South China Sea was within Malaysian waters, in a reference to an overlapping claim in the area by Beijing.
"China safeguards legitimate rights and interests in the South China Sea," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, responding to a question about Malaysia's warning of a protest note if there were "collisions" between Malaysian and Chinese vessels in the area.
Evil axis get out from marine boundary of Negara Malaysia, it is thousand miles from the land.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin today slammed remarks by Anwar Ibrahim stating Malaysia's willingness to negotiate with China over concerns about exploration activities by Petronas in the South China Sea, saying they undermine Malaysia's territorial claims."The statement is careless and should not come from a prime minister. The implication of this statement is that it indirectly recognises China's claim to an area that is already legally Malaysian territory that must be defended," the former prime minister said.
Anwar, in a speech briefing the Dewan Rakyat on his recent official trip to China, said while Petronas would continue its activities in the area, Malaysia was open to negotiations with Beijing over its concerns.
"I stressed... that Malaysia sees the area as Malaysian territory therefore Petronas will continue its exploration activities there," he said.
"But if China feels this is their right, Malaysia is open to negotiations."
Muhyiddin said Malaysia's territorial rights are not open to negotiation "even if it is claimed by China". He said there while there was no disputing that China was a global economic power, "it does not mean Malaysia's sovereignty can be compromised".
"Malaysia must firmly defend its territorial sovereignty and national security to protect the country's territorial rights and claims. "The prime minister's statement about Malaysia's openness to negotiate over its territorial rights has exposed it to the risk of a threat to its national sovereignty," he said, adding that Anwar's statement was weak, irresponsible and amounted to "surrendering the dignity and sovereignty of the country to a foreign power".
Petronas has been operating within the exclusive economic zone, part of which is claimed by China as its territory based on the so-called "nine-dash line".
In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration based in The Hague ruled that the nine-dash line had no legal basis.
Malaysia and China are among seven states surrounding the South China Sea which have laid territorial claims. The others are Brunei, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
China has been flexing its military muscle in the area in a move designed to shore up its territorial claim over the entire South China Sea.
Muhyiddin said Anwar had further undermined Malaysia's territorial sovereignty by repeating Chinese claims that its military presence was in "international waters".
He said Asean member states had yet to reach any consensus on conflicting claims in the South China Sea, but had rejected the nine-dash line claimed by Beijing.
"Regarding overlapping claims, any discussions must be held in accordance with the Asean Consensus and the South China Sea Code of Conduct," said Muhyiddin.
It is not logic that a country travel thousand miles to have "vessel collision" with our Petronas Exploration drilling operation in our economic marine territory. We all need to stand behind DSAI and Unity Government to resist any type of CCP hegemony, US hegemony, Europe hegemony and CCP racist, Malay racist, Malaysian Chinese racist, US racist etc. Let the government to attract all types of currencies investment but will not give up an inch of our Tanah Malaysia.
its also about whether you can protect your land or not also. regardless of how big the land you claim you are entitled to it. can you defend it? sometimes, we have to be realistic. like ukraine, so big land. but they don't have enough men to defend it.. war is cruel and factual. not just blow water.
you remind me of the Battle of Pengcheng.. A massive coalition led by Liu Bang, supposedly consisting of 560,000 troops vs Xiang Yu 30,000 troops.. Quantity is useless. you need to have high-quality professional soldiers.. A coalition sounds like trouble to begin with.
i support PM Anwar's move to have talks/negotiation with China as any settlements via hostility or war cannot solve the problems as the case of Russian vs Ukraine and instead would be used by outsider/third force as a battle ground against China. Some more, China is Malaysia's largest trading partners and longstanding relationship since the first visit by Laksaman Cheng Ho in the older days.

China wants a few rocks in the sea...give it to them la. No big deal. China will give back much much more in return. ..................that has been how it is from 2000 years ago.
remember China is a big power and big powers have privileges......america has the Monroe doctrine, China will have its own version as a regional hegemon.
from ancient times, smaller states pay tribute to the capital , the emperor will in return give back presents far exceeding the tributes. .................................... that has been how it is always when China is strong and the world at peace.
funny ...it is western countries that send navies far far away to topple governments, start wars, colonise people......China never have such need.
and it is america that is living in fear of losing its hegemony. china have no such fear. China is a very fierce commercial competitor and China will compete where ever it has a chance. , will compete fairly, openly, have no fears .
how did all these anti China stuffs come about? It wasn't there 10 years ago. The only sin China has make in last 10 years is China become too successful.
just like narrative on tiktok.............every thing based on theory..............the theory of this or that. Nothing can be proven, nothing has happened except media sensationalism about what could happen in theory.
China has passed its data security law. Europe has its data security law. Still waiting for America to have its data security law.....but nothing , zelch, just want to ban tik tok but no data security law...
