The last 3 Presidents of China are Engineers.

Jiang Zemin attended the Department of Electrical Engineering at the National Central University in Japanese-occupied Nanjing before transferring to National Chiao Tung University (now Shanghai Jiao Tong University). He graduated there in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He was President from 1989-2002.

Hu Jin Tau joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in April 1964. That year he graduated from Tsinghua University after studying hub hydropower stations at the Water Conservancy Engineering Department. He began working in July 1965 as an engineer. He was President 2002-2012.

President Xi Jinping studied chemical engineering at Beijing's Tsinghua University from 1975 to 1979. He became President from 2012- now. Up till now his achievement is miraculous.

President Xi started Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013 which is similar to Asian Development Bank or World Bank.

The idea was first proposed by Chinese president Xi Jinping during a visit to Kazakhstan in 2013, and central Asia is seen as the most vital region for the 'Belt' element. BRI is similar to Asian Development Bank or World Bank. The aim objection of these 3 financial institutions is to lend money to under-developed countries at low interest rate for the construction of infrastructures so that they can benefit and improve their economies.

Currently 71 countries are taking part in the BRI, together representing more than a third of the world`s GDP and two thirds of the world`s population.

Malaysia borrowed Rm 100 million to start the Muda Irrigation Project in Kedah and Perlis

Malaysia borrowed Rm 100 million from the World Bank in early 1960, just after Merdeka for the construction of the Muda Irrigation Project in Kedah and Perlis. At that time, Rm 100 million is a huge sum of money.

Before the implementation of the project, we could only grow one crop of rice during the North-East monsoon rain. When the wind changed direction to blow South-East, we could not grow rice in Kedah and Perlis. The aim of the project is to divert water from the Muda River to irrigate the rice fields in Kedah and Perlis during the dry season so that we can grow another rice crop.

How I co-founded Mudajaya and IJM Corporation Bhd.

In 1967 I co-founded a construction company called Chye Heng Construction Sdn Bhd with 3 partners and we secured a few construction contracts. After the completion of the Muda Irrigation Project, we changed the name of our company to Mudajaya. At the meantime, I co-founded Ipoh Garden Sdn Bhd with my Collegemate Dato Yap Lim Sen. When Ipoh Garden   was listed, IGB bought up Mudajaya and Jurutama to form IJM Corporation Bhd.

China's miraculous achievements

From 1921 to 2021, the Communist Party of China has led the country to create countless miracles. As China's overall national strength continues growing, the country has become the biggest engine to drive global economic growth.

In the last 40 years China has elevated 600 million people out of poverty. By 2018, more than half of China's population — 707 million people — had entered the country's middle-income bracket, according to calculations from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies that defined the middle class as those spending between $10 and $50 a day.

To cut the story short, I will only list the few significant achievements.

High Speed Rail

High-speed rail (HSR) in China is the world's longest high-speed railway network and most extensively used – with a total length of 40,000 km by the end of 2021. The HSR network encompasses newly built rail lines with a design speed of 200–350 km/h (120–220 mph). USA does not have HSR.

Container Ships

This statistic shows the number of transport vessels in China grew from 2008 to 2020 to 126,800 vessels. China has more container ships than the total of 10 countries including USA.

Engineering feat

The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge is a 55-kilometre bridge–tunnel system consisting of a series of three cable-stayed bridges, an undersea tunnel, and four artificial islands. It is both the longest sea crossing and the longest open-sea fixed link in the world.

China has become a mainstay of global economic growth. China has been the world's second largest economy for 12 consecutive years from 2010. Very soon China will be the largest economy in the world.

What is Engineering?

Engineering is the ability to harness the force of nature for the benefit of mankind. Engineering is an extremely rewarding yet demanding and challenging career, allowing the opportunity to make a huge difference to individuals and the world.

By the way Dato Yap Lim Sen and I are Chartered Civil Engineer of UK and our code of practice is the ability to harness the force of nature for the benefit of men. That is how the last 3 Chinese Presidents who are Engineers made China so great and will continue to impact the future of the world.

Is china extensive HSR really something to praise about? Most of it are underutilized, but the debt they took to finance those HSR are enormous. it also crowds out conventional train, which are cheaper for consumers and better for cargo. A lot of cargo in China still has to be transported by trucks because the HSR are not good at carrying cargo.

The problem with China is that they've been building infrastructure for the sake of building them. There's not much thought put into the economics, just build build build. I guess that's what happens when you keep having engineers as leaders. For a hammer, everything is a nail.
