PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a clear and firm message that the government will not allow any parties to sow discord and divide the people for influence, gain or power, says Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister said this message, delivered during the National Day Address 2024 here on Friday (Aug 30), underscored the vital importance of unity, which must not be underestimated.

The government spokesman said Malaysians should strive to ensure that independence is not just freedom from colonial rule but also a genuine embodiment of freedom.

"At the same time, there was a reminder about how we cannot permit any party to sow discord and divide the people solely for influence and personal gain, which undermines our existing unity,” he told reporters after the event at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here on Friday.

Fahmi said the Prime Minister also addressed the betrayal surrounding the loss of Batu Puteh and emphasised that open debates in Parliament will serve as important lessons for future generations to uphold national interests.

Fahmi, who is also National Day and Malaysia Day 2024 celebration main committee chairman, urged Malaysians to join in and enliven the spirit of independence at tomorrow's main event at 8 am, with this year’s theme being "Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka."

Meanwhile, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi concurred with the Prime Minister’s call to remind all Malaysians to maintain harmony and unity among all races.

He said the Prime Minister’s stern warning to all parties, even small groups, not to make statements or actions that could harm the harmony built over many years, is crucial.

"Unity and harmony...we should focus on national progress and the welfare of the people. After 67 years, our country must continue to be strengthened through efforts to enhance unity and achieve even greater success,” he said.

The event, organised by the National Unity Ministry, was attended by 7,000 people, including Cabinet ministers, civil servants, unity activists such as Rukun Tetangga members, members of the Rukun Negara secretariat, Rukun Negara Club members, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the private sector and the general public.- Bernama
