If an educated doc gets conned it could be due to the following reasons:-
1) S T UP ID
2) Received medical education due to privilege but not qualification. Hence, pointing back to point 1.
3) Incontrollable desire due to greed. The thought of hit and run must have been dominant.

Nobody in i3 will be cheated if he is no greedy. Sifu told them to buy at their own risk. If they didn't trust sifu, they won't get conned. To prove a point, lets look at the fantastic TP which is highly not probable, and yet they follow blindly due to greed.
