The Secret Cost of Google’s Data Centers: Billions of Gallons of Water to Cool Servers

https://time.com/5814276/google-data-centers-water/

A few weeks earlier in nearby Mesa, Google proposed a plan for a giant data center among the cacti and tumbleweeds. The town is a founding member of the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association, but water conservation took a back seat in the deal it struck with the largest U.S. internet company. Google is guaranteed 1 million gallons a day to cool the data center, and up to 4 million gallons a day if it hits project milestones. If that was a pyramid of water jugs, it would tower thousands of feet into Arizona’s cloudless sky.

Alphabet’s Google is building more data centers across the U.S. to power online searches, web advertising and cloud services. The company has boasted for years that these huge computer-filled warehouses are energy efficient and environmentally friendly. But there’s a cost that the company tries to keep secret. These facilities use billions of gallons of water, sometimes in dry areas that are struggling to conserve this limited public resource.

“Data centers are expanding, they’re going everywhere. They need to be built in a way that ensures they are not taking critical resources away from water-scarce communities,” said Gary Cook, global climate campaigns director at Stand.earth, an environmental advocacy group.

Google considers its water use a proprietary trade secret and bars even public officials from disclosing the company’s consumption. But information has leaked out, sometimes through legal battles with local utilities and conservation groups. In 2019 alone, Google requested, or was granted, more than 2.3 billion gallons of water for data centers in three different states, according to public records posted online and legal filings.

Microsoft's water consumption jumps 34 percent amid AI boom
Thirsty work for OpenAI's data center provider

https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/microsofts-water-consumption-jumps-34-percent-amid-ai-boom/#:~:text=Microsoft%20said%20that%20the%20company,for%20its%20cloud%20data%20centers

Microsoft said that the company consumed 6.4 million cubic meters of water in 2022, primarily for its cloud data centers.

That represents a 34 percent jump over the year before, with generative AI workloads believed to be at least partially to blame.

In its report, Google said that its data centers consumed 19.5 million cubic meters of water last year, up 20 percent.

i was wondering earlier why we humans have one thing very distinct from apes physiology despite evolving very recently from the same ancestors.....relative to apes our body hair had diminished with humans ability to cushion themself with skins of animals as clothing but the amount hair on the head and length it grows is exceptionally different! but why?

Its because we need so much capacity to cool down the brain (through sweat and evaporation using the large surface area from hair) and to protect from direct sunlight (overheating)

The same applies to the Data Center...the more the brain capacity, the greater the heat generated and cooling need.

The world is heading towards making a lot of Digital Brain in Johor basically....

USEP hit the max SGD4,500/MWh for a period in the morning as shown by the chart below. This shows the electricity supply is very tight in Singapore, and whenever there is a spike in demand or there is a generating unit tripped off or in downtime, USEP spikes up. Such occurrence will be more often going forward as demand is getting higher due to more industrial/commercial activities and new data centres and EV charging.

A company director, Dato' Seri Yeoh Seok Hong, bought 135,000 shares on June 25, 2024.

In the last annual report on September 21, 2023, the top 30 shareholders held 80% of the company's shares. With the recent purchase by Yeoh's family, the number of shares available for trading on the market keeps decreasing.

AVG USEP for MAY 2024 is only 240 , MAY 2023 was 492. I think very hard to match back Q2 2023 result, when there is no growth, market start to dump.. Moreover AVG USEP from 1st of jun until 13 jun only 157?? habis liao macam ini. Another gap down selling down on coming AUG QR 2024. Profit might about 600M which drop 40% from Q2 2023.

@sg999, we cannot conclude that PowerSeraya's earnings will plunge in this Q4 FY2024 just looking at the USEP. No doubt USEP was exceptionally high in April-June 2023 which gave good long generation profits to PowerSeraya and all gencos last year. The high USEP was caused by higher crude oil prices / LNG prices as well as more spikes in USEP before TPC was implemented.

As I said before, the bulk of the earnings of PowerSeraya is locked in retails contracts that typically last for 6 months to 2-3 years, with pool margin contributing less than 5% profit in normal times. Last Q4 FY2023 was a bit abnormal in the sense that all gencos made exceptional gains from selling extra generation into the pool when USEP spiked up to SGD1,000/MWh or above. I remember Sembcorp CEO mentioned that SEmbcorb could have made extra pool margin of about SGD60 million in a quarter had TPC not been implemented. I estimated that PowerSeraya also made about SGD60 million of extra pool margin in Q4 FY2023 which caused YTL Power to make a record quarterly net profit of over RM1.0 billion.

Now things are looking good again after a weak Q3 in Jan-Mar 2024. We are seeing better USEP and retails margin in April and May 2024, and I expect the momentum to continue into June 2024.

I am looking forward to a better financial performance from PowerSeraya in this Q4 FY24, compared to Q3 FY24. It should be slightly lower than last year Q4 FY23 which booked in extraordinary pool margin, but the profits will still be very good.

In this coming Q4 FY2024, YTL Power's net profit may not be as high as last Q4's RM1.0 billion, but I am confident it will be higher than Q3 FY2024's RM698m.

Furthermore, with cooling inflation in the UK and with the 13% water tariff hike since 1st April 2024 secured by Wessex Waters, there is a strong likelihood that Wessex will turn around in the coming Q4 FY2024. I expect net profit contribution to be around RM50-100 million from Wessex to YTL Power in Q4.

And there will be maiden earnings contribution from the first phase of 8MW data centre for SEA Ltd in this Q4 FY2024, though I do not expect it to be much, a RM5-10m net profit contribution would be good enough.

Dear dragon328,
I like to hear your comments or analysis on Ranhill.
I believe all data centers need a lot of water to cool down.
The selling price of water to data centers is at 3.55 per M3.
Will Ranhill make a lot of money from this water sale ?
Thank you.

@Mr. OTB, I have not really studied Ranhill in details, as the MTO is still going on, I will not post any analysis on Ranhill so as not to affect the MTO process in any way.

Looking from the surface, I think there is much synergy to be derived from Ranhill after the take over by YTL Power as the latter has much expertise in managing water assets after controlling Wessex Waters for over 20 years. Wessex Waters became the No. 1 most efficient water companies in the UK as rated by Ofwat in the few years after the take over by YTL Power in 2002. A 5% cost saving from the synergy after YTLP take over would result in Ranhill's profits to double up.

Dragon328...wat do u think abt telecom business q4?

dragon328

2,575 posts

Posted by dragon328 > 2024-07-01 12:04 | Report Abuse

@Apple888, the telco 5G business of YTL Power is no doubt disappointing so far, as much as I wished for Yes to break even as early as in Q3 FY2024, it disappointed us with a bigger loss.

For the upcoming Q4 FY2024, I would expect smaller loss compared to Q3 as they would have signed up more 5G subscribers from expansion into smaller cities like Ipoh and Alor Setar. But I hope I am wrong and Yes would turn around in this Q4.

The telco business is expected to continue its losses until breakeven is achieved, and this will take time, im not expecting a turnaround in next qtr, similarly the digital banking business is also expected to show initial losses. AEONCR has forecasted their digital banking business toshow RM160m losses in a year of which 50% or RM80m belongs to AeonCr and therefore qtrly losses of RM20m.... and similar will also be seen in YTLP.
YTLP needs to brush up its recurring income to offset this small initial losses with the main contention being wessex power. Now that UK has so called come out of recession, and with the increased tariff (not sure is applicable next qtr) will there be a turnaround? Following article (too optimistic tho...)

Q4 FY2023 is 1B profit, what is your estimated profit Q4 FY2024 based on current UESP? (which i think is quite weak). For jun only recorded around 150.

One trillion (RM) of investment on data centers is coming to be set up in Malaysia from 2024 to 2028.
Major investors to set up these data centers are Amazon, Apple, Goggle, Microsoft and Nvidia from the USA.
There are 280 MW of data centers in 2024, this figure will increase to 3,221 MW in 2028, an increase of 11.5 times.
Based on DC Bytes projections, CGS (broker) said the data centre capacity in Malaysia is expected to deliver a 32% to 56% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in 2023-2028, far outstripping the 8% CAGR forecast for Singapore.
The current electricity (power) usage in 2023 is > 20.0 GW, additional new capacity of power to be added by 2030 is 10.5 GW. It means extra 50% of electricity usage by 2030 due to the increased capacity of these data centers and population growth.
The high usage of electricity will benefit YTLPower (in Singapore) and Tenaga in Malaysia.

The GDP growth of Malaysia in 2023 is around 3.7%, it is projected to grow to around 4.5% in 2024.
The total GDP of Malaysia is around 2 trillion (RM), 1 trillion investment from data centers in the next 5 years means 200 billion (RM) is added to the GDP of Malaysia each year from 2024 until 2028.
If the above statement is true, the GDP growth will be increased to 8% to 10% each year from 2025 to 2028. (I assume the investment (money) will come in a big way from 2025 onward).
Looking back into history, the last GDP growth of 8% to 10% in Malaysia happened in the early 90's.
In 1993, there was a super bull market in our lifetime due to a high GDP of Malaysia around 10%.
If I am not mistaken in 1993 bull run, FBMKLCI index almost double in 1993 bull run. FBMKLCI index started to move up north from around 500 points to around 1300 points in 1993.
Likewise, I expect a bull market to start from 2024 to 2028.
The present FBMKLCI is around 1477 in 2024, I hope the FBMKLCI index can double to 3,000 points in 2028.
I hope the second super bull run starts from 2024 onward and last until 2028.

Please read this link.
https://www.malaymail.com/news/money/2024/02/27/malaysia-in-sweet-spot-for-prolonged-bull-market/120267.
Good luck.

Quote from The Star 19-6-2024
""As of June this year, nine data centre projects with a combined capacity of 1,280 megawatts have been completed in the state, while six other projects with an estimated capacity of almost 1,490 megawatts are in the process of being completed.

"On top of that, there are 30 other projects that are in discussion and approval level,” he said in a statement here on Thursday (June 20)."
