Power & Utilities Sector - 1Q24 Within Expectations

Review

The Power and Utilities (P&U) sector reported results that were largely in line with expectations in 1QCY24 (Figure 2).

Compared with the preceding quarter, core profit for the sector soared 24.3% QoQ mainly driven by lower non-fuel operating expenses for TENAGA (Figure 3). Compared with 1QCY23, core profit jumped 16.2% YoY supported by stellar performance at Power Seraya of YTLPOWR and turnaround at MALAKOF following the easing of negative fuel margins.

Outlook

With the launch of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), a roadmap meant to shift Malaysia from traditional fossil fuel economy into a high-value green economy, we expect P&U sector to be the major beneficiary due to the exciting earnings possibility that the roadmap presents.

In line with the NETR, Malaysia recently set up the Energy Exchange Malaysia (ENEGEM) for trading in green electricity supply to Singapore. This is a small but important step forward before the nation scales up the cross-border sale of renewable energy to Singapore where the electricity price is much higher. TENAGA should be the main beneficiary as the group can increase its interconnection grid with Singapore in the future and hence collect returns from utilisation of the grid.

Meanwhile, the government also targets to implement third party access (TPA) by allowing independent power producers (IPPs) to sell directly to consumers, bypassing their need to purchase from TENAGA. This is a positive news for IPPs and the power generation business of TENAGA, providing them with possibility of higher returns compared with competitive bidding under the large-scale solar tenders.

No intention to sell them.
I like to keep them for a bit longer term.

When the share price of YTLPower drops, I prefer to keep quiet.
I do not like to bad mouth any stock in I3.
I will add position if the share price drops to a strong support level.

I still stick to my target price at 6.30 in 2024.
Hopefully this target price can be achieved in the second half of 2024.

I’d sold 67% of my entire NVDA stock shares a couple days ago at almost its ATH price but it has just recorded another ATH, aiyah.
Anyway in the meantime, I’ve been adding more YTLp stock shares in the past few days at various prices under rm5.
I’ve not sold any of my YTLp shares that were bought from rm2.50 to rm3.82 yet because of obvious reasons.

Interesting to note that all major shareholders @5% and above are all within YTL group and family members.... nearest foreign is Credit Suisse HK at 3.12% and closest local is EPF at 2.53%.... remaining which is floating at 28.5% (other yeoh clan members also own here) ... selective ones UBS at 0.44% and Vanguard at 0.82% ..... peace

@Sumbody Actually I used to think like you that Bonus Issue is a good thing but someone shared in another forum post that Bonus Issue is not necessarily good as it will dilute the shares and share prices will be less fluid. IMO while I would love to have 'more' shares (value the same), I prefer the shares to be more exclusive and limited for prices to shoot up.

@Unfair, YTLP's weak Q3 FY2024 result has been much discussed and talked about here and even exaggerated by local media and some local analyst. You are just being unfair here.

As I said before, Q3 was just a temporary blip as the drop in PowerSeraya earnings was not compensated by a rebound in Wessex and Yes' earnings in time. Most analysts have agreed on this and upgraded the target price for YTL Power after Q3 result, as the prospects of AI data centre are bright enough to drive the next phase of earnings growth for YTLP.

We shall see this in the upcoming Q4 FY2024.

@Edison Cheah ..... haha thats too optimistic, Q4 will never make the 1.1b NP after MI, will be lucky if can even match the 700m made in Q3, for your info USEP price($/Mvh)/demand(MW) are as follows - March 235/6,431 and April 288/6,638 (May not yet issued)..... so good news is that April is higher than March which is a good indicator, lets hope May and June similar as April if not higher..... cheers :-)

The present gain is equal to 360%, I am laughing all the way to the bank.
I still hold a big portfolio of YTLPower, no intention to sell them.

YTLPower is another Supermx in 2020, the share price of Supermx went up from 3.60 to 24.50 high in 2020.

Johore Investment Trade & Consumer Affairs- seen Promoting Green Data Centres in Johore.- YTLP to be the main beneficiary.

Johor Investment, Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Lee Ting Han told ST that starting in June, the state government will implement guidelines requiring new data centre operators to demonstrate efforts to use green energy hardware and software.

New data centre developments in Johor will be assessed on their sustainability efforts, including power and water efficiency, he said.

“If data centre operators do not show efforts to use green energy, the committee can recommend to reject the building permission application of their data centre,” said Mr Lee.
