KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 9): Local brokerages are of the view that the recently-announced measures to stimulate the stock market will help boost trading velocity in terms of volume and turnover, expand investor base and push the benchmark FBM KLCI to new heights.
In view of the announcement made by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the opening of the Securities Commission’s World Capital Market Symposium on Tuesday (Feb 6), the Association of Stockbroking Companies Malaysia (ASCM) described the new measures as a “tremendous leap forward” towards improving market performance.
The measures include liberalising the margin financing rules, allowing intraday short-selling and adding a new category of traders known as "trading specialists".
“(Allowing) intraday short selling (IDSS) will increase daily transactions, as we will now have a long/short market. With adequate and effective controls, IDSS will enable investors to trade both ways. IDSS will also have a stabilising effect on market prices,” the association said in a statement today.
ASCM also said the liberalisation of rules governing margin trading will accord the industry, additional flexibility in managing their businesses.
“The exemption of stamp duty on mid- and small-sized public-listed companies should further encourage investors’ attention to this segment, which has long been below their radar,” ASCM said.
“New entrants to the market will enjoy six months waiver on trading and clearing fees. This is a positive incentive to rejuvenate the market by attracting new players,” the statement added.
ASCM expects the volume-based incentive programme and the introduction of a trading specialist to further enhance investors’ participation, alongside other measures.
