PLKN was designed to foster national unity and instill discipline among youth. Initially implemented in 2004, it faced multiple criticisms over significant public funds were allocated to sustain the program, estimated at RM600 million annually during peak operations. Many questioned its actual impact on unity and character development. Reports of trainee fatalities and injuries raised public outcry. The program was suspended for good in 2018, reflecting dissatisfaction with its value and implementation.
