A study from the University of Copenhagen in Demark found that both old and young during a 2 weeks of inactivity, the leg muscle strength can weaken by a third which is equivalent to 20-30 years of aging. That is why sports is so important.
When I was in school, I played football, basketball and badminton. I was badminton captain for the school and also badminton captain in KL Technical College which is now known as UTM.
I am 89 years old. About 1 year ago, I slipped while coming down the stairs and broke my Achilles’ tendon. I saw an orthopaedic surgent who told me that although he could re-connect the tendon by surgery, he preferred to let it heal by itself which would take about 3 months. He said that at my age I could get infection from open surgery very easily. He is an honest surgent. His consultation fee was only Rm 80. He did not want to make more money from me.
As I was limping to take a shower one evening, I twisted my right knee. Again, I saw my honest orthopaedic surgent who told me to take an X-ray and blood test. After his examination of my knee X-ray, he gave me 1 injection on the left and 1 on the right side of my knee. The injections were so painful that I yelled so loud as if I was going to die. I could not walk and I have to use a wheel chair to move about for 3 months. But I am very determined to walk. At first, I used a walker to help me walk. Then I used a walking stick. Now I can walk without a walking stick although still painful. I must endure the pain. Every evening my wife and I with our dog walk for about 20 minutes.
The American Heart Association advised everybody to walk at least 30 minutes every day. The 30 minutes can be made up of short walks. Walking around the house is also considered. So, I don’t sit facing my computer longer than 1 hour at any one time. I get up and walk for a few minutes.
As you get older and older, your appetite starts to drop and then walking becomes progressively weaker. The body feels less enthusiastic and less energetic. This is the beginning of the disease of most elderly people suffer from - namely muscle wasting and weakness.
As you may be aware... the leading cause of death for many elderly people at the age of 65 and above is not a strange disease. The main cause of parental death starts with slips and falls - either in the room, bathroom/toilet or going up/down the stairs.
This is related to the weakening of the muscles experienced by the elderly... so that they are prone to poorer balance and falls. All of us will slowly and not so consciously experience a physical decline with significant changes to the body over the next 10 years. A simple example is we start to eat lesser and become less agile in our movements.
Please note that by the age of 50 we have already started to experience 1-2% muscle weakness with up to 30% muscle loss by the age of 60 and up to 50% by the age of 80 years old.
This situation can only be prevented by two main things namely a sensible diet and exercise (physical activity). These two things you should still do as much as possible no matter how old you are.

Older people really need Vitamin D to prevent bone loss and muscle weakness. The skin of older people may have difficulty in absorbing and creating Vitamin D from the sun alone.

Wow, Tobby. That's cool, man. If you're still comfortable doing squats, that means that your knees are still in good condition.
You could also do leg press at the leg press machine, if you do not mind going into the gym. It's good for strengthening and firming up legs, thighs, calves and glutes. Without causing too much stress on your knees.
It also helps to strengthen your stomach muscles in an indirect way, without needing to do sit-ups, which can be a bit hard on your lower back.

Rich! Yeah, very new! Only like 2 weeks! Actually barbell belongs to my son! He gave it to me! He told me to do some squat with it! Squat seems like good exercise! Yeah, very careful doing it as my knee not young anymore! But it does feel good after completing all sets! No more headache! Somemore my 2 inches buddy is getting erected like when i was young! Well, at least my wifey is happy! I guess 2 minutes of pleasure really makes her happy!

aah, tobby, good to hear that now you're discovering the other 'extra' and 'strategic' benefits of strength training ... you want even more power?
ha ha ha, now, could be time for you to start checking these others out:
1. overhead pulldown: good for arms, shoulders, back, pectorals ('wing muscles')
2. simple arm dumbell lift (maybe also called 'missionary lift'?): for arms and shoulders
3. bench press: for shoulders, arms, biceps, chest
4. leg press: for legs, thighs, calves, glutes, tummy (indirect, but still effective), can substitute this for your squat (which is more stressful on knees, therefore less suitable for older people)
5. power walking: good for 'dissolving away' the soreness that you have picked up during your strength training session, also good for stregthening aerobic (cardio-vascular, or heart-lung) fitness. do gently at first, then you can gradually increase intensity as your fitness improves. do it on a different day from your strength training day. I only kept to one gym day a week + 2 - 3 power walking days a week (pre-covid times) it kept me fitter & stronger than many guys 25 years younger.
it's kind of a bit 'dull' but good, so you can download songs you like on your handfone to keep the boredom away while walking. start with slow music for warming up, then progress to faster and faster as you get warmed up and walking faster.
you can take periodic breath breaks if you need. but once you get to a certain fitness level, you might find it more beneficial to end this session at your own maximum doable walking speed.

I can push weights that only one or two other guys in the same gym would even dare to try, they also usually much much younger and bigger, and usually they'd give up fast
becos they always want to push too heavy too fast, before their legs are ready and strong enough for it, and they always rushing and skipping the warming up phase, which is necessary and important
