TOP 10 OVERSOLD STOCKS TO BUY NOW WHILE STILL VERY CHEAP! (Calvin Tan Research)
August 2017

This was the headline of the post by calvintaneng. Truly a disappointing result by any comparison. This raises many questions on calvintaneng's approach.

He became famous in his "totally blinded" promotion of NETX. The hero of Netx fame.

Peter Lynch categorize stocks into 6 Classes

1)Stalwarts

2)Fast Growers

3)Cyclicals

4)Turnarounds

5)Assets Play

6) Slow Growers

Calvin likes No. 1 to 5

3iii can only invest in no. 1 only.

See

1) The Eagle up in the Air Soar Above the Clouds and can SEE FROM SHORE TO SHORE

2) Other Flying Birds Can See From Mountain To Mountain or Tree to Tree\

3) The Chicken on the ground see nothing except to scratch for some earth worms

SO THE CHICKEN WITH MYOPIC EYESIGHT TELLS EAGLE HOW TO SEE?

LOL!!!

For someone who claims to be a master of Peter Lynch's teachings, does calvintaneng exhibits that he understands Peter Lynch's teaching well.

Yet, calvintaneng thinks someone does not know Peter Lynch's teaching well. Yet, remarkably, the same chap bought BONIA at 80 sen in 2019 on his own analysis.

Just compare and contrast.

The thrill of investing in stocks, using Peter Lynch's classification of companies.

1. Dutch Lady

A fast grower in its early days. Now a stalwart.

2. Nestle

A stalwart and slow grower. Generating high FCF with little capex requirement.

3. Aeon Credit.

A fast grower. Financial stock. High risk sector.

4. Guinness

A stalwart or slow grower.

5. Petdag

A fast grower over the last decade. Smaller company then, adding 50+ new petrol stations per year. Now a slow grower or stalwart.

6. HaiO

A gruesome stock that turned around in 2005 / 2006. Those who spotted this then would have a lot of gains when others started to show interest in it. Presently, a slow grower stock. Not to be dismissed.

7. KAF

For years, this stock lingered at price below its net asset value. In its book was a piece of land in Jalan Kia Peng which was worth a lot more. This land was subsequently repriced and the company eventually taken over by the majority shareholders. This was an asset play stock.

8. Topglove and Hartalega

These companies were fast growers. They are also in a cyclical sector. Essentially, they are cyclical growth stocks. Those who have own these stocks over the long term would have multibagger gains.

9. Tongher

A cyclical stock. Not easy to play in this sector. Presently, it is in its cyclical high.

10. Public Bank

A stalwart or slow grower.

11. Guan Chong

A turnaround and fast grower (but only for a year or so). Cyclical sector. Not easy to play these stocks but for those who spotted it in 2009, it did climbed 200% or so. However, to protect your gains, you need to sell and not hold long term. Not easy to play cyclical stocks. You need to buy right and also to sell right.

12. Pentamaster

A fast grower for the moment. A fast growth stock maybe highly priced. Be careful, but if you have spotted this before its price climbed, the rewards have been and can be huge.

13. GENM

Slow grower.

14. LPI

Slow grower that has delivered superior returns.

15. Scientex

Slow grower

Why was the hero of Netx, calvintaneng so exuberant on these 10 stocks?
The answer is because by his analysis, all these 10 stocks trade at a big discount to their intrinsic value.

On August 2017, calvintaneng provided his intrinsic values for his 10 stocks.

INTRINSIC VALUE
WTK 289
BJ Corp 500
MRCB 500
Bonia 150

An obvious question raised by calvintaneng's post in this thread is, "Why were his intrinsic values for these companies in August 2017 were so much higher than their share prices in August 2017?

Wasn't calvintaneng a clever chap, since he was able to identify so many undervalued stocks in August 2017? These were not just undervalued, they were severely undervalued; just look at calvintaneng's intrinsic values for these stocks.

Do you believe in the efficient market hypothesis? I do. But I don't agree that the stock market is efficient ALL the time. That's why the hard working investor can diligently sometimes find an undervalued good/great company to invest into.

But, calvintaneng was able to identify 10 deeply undervalued stocks. How did he come about his valuation of these stocks?

Did he apply conservative assumptions in his valuation of their intrinsic values? Perhaps he did, or perhaps he did not.

Did he make mistakes in their valuation? If yes, these were MANY mistakes, not just the occasional ones. Should we be cautious in his promotions? Perhaps, we should not be cautious over this calvintaneng's promotions despite so many obvious mistakes?

Perhaps, calvintaneng wished to blame these 10 stocks on bad luck. It was just bad luck on that period. In other times, he had been in better luck. Should calvintaneng blamed these high intrinsic values not being achieved by his 10 stocks to bad luck? Or perhaps, he should not.

Posted by Integrity. Intelligent. Industrious. 3iii (iiinvestsmart)$€£¥ > 2023-01-05 17:38 | Report Abuse

Another question raised is, "Why is such a smart person like calvintaneng who floods this forum with repeated words of wisdom, quoting from Buffett to Peter Lynch, got his 10 stocks so wrong in August 2017? I hope you agree his 10 stocks selection in August 2017 were just terrible, using whatever comparison measures.

Might calvintaneng be a better investor if he had taken time to study his own mistakes, before continuing to show to others his prowess and cleverness.

What lessons might calvintaneng gained from these 10 stocks of his? Since he did give the intrinsic values for each of these stocks, might we assume he did do some work on deriving these. If he did, he could have reworked his valuation and learned where he might have made his mistakes. His intrinsic values by any measures were just far too high. Was calvintaneng prone to mania or depression? Perhaps, in this hypomanic phase, calvintaneng could see no risk and just rewards, huge ones as so.?

Posted by Integrity. Intelligent. Industrious. 3iii (iiinvestsmart)$€£¥ > 2023-01-05 17:40 | Report Abuse

Can I conclude that given calvintaneng's very very high intrinsic values for these 10 stocks, might he be in one of his high mood swings phase? Will need his friends or family members to look out for this, in case.

My note on intrinsic value

Technical Analysis (TA)

Technical analysis is a trading discipline employed to evaluate investments and identify trading opportunities by analyzing statistical trends gathered from trading activities, such as price movement trade volume and focus on patterns of price movements, trading signals and various other analytical charting tools to evaluate a security's strength or weakness. Thus TA pattern is influence by Greed & Fear (Behavior pattern) and will be most effective if use together with FA Qualitative study of Economic condition and Industry condition that create greed and fear where people will panic buy or panic sell as no one will look at FA quantitative financial data

Fundamental analysis (FA)

Fundamental analysts study anything that can affect the stock's value, including macroeconomic factors (e.g. economy and industry conditions) and microeconomic factors (e.g. financial conditions and company management). The end goal of fundamental analysis is to produce a quantitative value (Intrinsic Value) that an investor can compare with a stock's current market price, thus indicating whether the stock is undervalued or overvalued. Fundamental analysis is a method of evaluating a stock in an attempt to assess its intrinsic value.

In summary Fundamental Analysis cover:
QUANTITATIVE
Financial data/ratio contain in current and past financial report.
QUALITIVE
Economy condition (Current and future)
Industry condition (Current and future)
Company management (Current and future)
Profit growth prospect (Current and future)

In short what many people term as Business Sense (BS) is actually the qualitative part of Fundamental Analysis. BS is subset of FA.

Beside explaining the relationship between TA, FA and BS, I emphasis important of reading financial report: P&L statement, Balance sheet, Cash Flow and working out the intrinsic value.

Definition: Intrinsic value is the Present value of the investment of all the expected cash flow over the lifetime discounted at the appropriate discount rate.

Intrinsic value = (CF1/ (1+d)^1) + (CF2/(1+d)^2) + ----- +(CFn/(1+d)^n)

Where:
CF = Cash Flow in the Period
d = Discount rate
n = The period number
This Intrinsic value is actually a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF)
Example of intrinsic value of INSAS is then the Sum of DCF expected cash flow from varies business streams.
For INSAS assets rich case, it is my opinion that the liquid assets minus total liabilities should be added to this intrinsic value.

My main take away is not on promoting INSAS but promoting shareholders activism: Shareholder activism is not a privilege - it is a right and a responsibility. When we invest in a company, we own part of that company and we are partly responsible for how that company progresses. If we believe there is something going wrong with the company, then we, as shareholders, must become active and vocal- Mark Mobius.

Chapter 20 - “Margin of Safety” as the Central Concept of Investment

A single quote by Graham on page 516 struck me:

Observation over many years has taught us that the chief losses to investors come from the purchase of low-quality securities at times of favorable business conditions.

Basically, Graham is saying that most stock investors lose money because they invest in companies that seem good at a particular point in time, but are lacking the fundamentals of a long-lasting stable company.

This seems obvious on the surface, but it’s actually a great argument for thinking more carefully about your individual stock investments. If most of your losses come from buying companies that seem healthy but really aren’t, isn’t that a profound argument for carefully studying any company you might invest in?

BARGAINS MUST ALSO SATISFY OTHER CONDITIONS.

Just because a stock sells at or below its net asset value does not warrant that it is a sound purchase.

In addition to below market values, the investor also must demand
- a strong financial position,
- a satisfactory p/e ratio, and
- an assurance that the firm’s earnings will be sustained over the years.

This is not an entirely difficult bill to fill except under dangerously high market conditions.

However, the investor will forgo the most brilliant, high growth prospects.

When it comes to bad businesses, I must know that it is a bad investment however attractive the valuation may seem. I love how Charlie Munger explains that – “a piece of turd in a bowl of raisins is still a piece of turd”…and…“there is no greater fool than yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.”

It's important to note that investing in the stock market is not a surefire way to make money, and investors should always be prepared for the possibility of losses. It's important to have a well-defined investment strategy and to conduct thorough research before making any investment decisions.

Ill-informed investors: Those who invest without doing proper research or understanding the risks and fundamentals of a company or the market can make poor investment decisions and ultimately underperform.

Dutaland - 54.1%
BPuri - 86.67%
BJCorp +1.52%

Dear calvintaneng,

Please learn from your mistakes. A fool is one who fails to learn from his mistakes and continues to do the same things hoping for different outcomes. An obvious lesson is a GRUESOME COMPANY CAN REMAIN GRUESOME FOR A VERY LONG TIME. Another is many lost money because they "fell in love" with the gruesome company at a time when it showed a temporary period of good fortune. More painful still is the opportunity costs of not investing in a great company that has delivered gains in the same period.

Some good advice for the hero of Netx, calvintaneng.

Here are a few pieces of advice for someone who has had difficulty with stock investing in the past:

Educate yourself: Learn as much as you can about the stock market and different types of investments. Understand the risks and potential rewards associated with different stocks and sectors.

Have a plan: Develop a strategy and stick to it. Decide on your risk tolerance, investment goals, and the types of stocks you want to invest in.

Diversify your portfolio: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Spread your investments across different sectors and companies to reduce the risk of losing all your money if one stock performs poorly.

Keep a long-term perspective: Investing in the stock market is a long-term game. Don't make impulsive decisions based on short-term market fluctuations. Stay patient and stay the course.

Keep your emotions in check: Don't let fear or greed guide your investment decisions. Stick to your plan and don't let emotions cloud your judgement.

Be patient: Stocks can be volatile, so it may take some time before you see a return on your investment. Investing is a long-term process, so be patient and stay the course.

Use stop loss: ?

Have a proper risk management plan.

It's also important to remember that investing in the stock market comes with risk, and there's no guarantee of returns. It's important to only invest money that you can afford to lose.

TOP 10 OVERSOLD STOCKS TO BUY NOW WHILE STILL VERY CHEAP! (Calvin Tan Research)
https://klse.i3investor.com/web/blog/detail/www.eaglevisioninvest.com/130378

calvintaneng peppered this forum with so many posts. The above is one of his many posts.

When Bonia went up over the last 2 years, he crowed. But, the truth is, from the above post, calvintaneng is selective in highlighting his "winners" when in fact, he had so many "losers" which he conveniently hid tightly.

At least, calvintaneng should comment how wrong he was when he recommended these 10 stocks which he considered very undervalued and got these so wrong. That shows integrity.

Do not sidetrack people with good ideas by talking so much that are irrelevant. At least, admit and tell the truth. Admit that he got it so wrong. What is wrong with this admission? :-) Have a good Chinese New Year. Cheers.

ca;vintaneng just does not admit. What can be more transparent than what was posted? Here is a post when he said these were the 10 most undervalued stocks to buy. A few years later, we learned the truth. The truth showed otherwise. Just be a man, and admit that you got it so wrong.

Yes, also very dishonestly too, we only heard him crowing his Bonia and truly, this is just typical of him: highlighting his winners among so many losers. I sensed his losers overwhelmed his small number of winners. Enough is enough. We need those who are sharing great investment knowledge and finds in this forum. Stop peppering this forum with dishonest posts. Regards

P/S: ... and there was his 2 years promotion of NETX too. :-)

This useless 3iii has been targeting sifu calvin tan with his bias comment for a long time loh!
3iii should look into the mirror and reflect how are the performance of his top holding Dlady & Nestle since 2017, b4 making unfair & unjustify comment at sifu calvin loh!

Btw sifu calvin have make many many successful call buy & alot of people benefited from his pick including raider loh!

The recent sifu calvin calls on high exposure on plantations are very strategic & defensive and it is meant to protect investors from simply buying into rubbish & overvalue stocks mah!

Buying into plantation co.....which have big exposure to finite land at very cheap price is a very intelligent way for long term fundamental investors loh!

Some of great plantation call by sifu calvin & already proven bringing in very good return todate are bplant & jtiasa mah!

I believe calvin tan huge call on TSH will start to bring huge return loh!
General Raider has followed calvin & bought into TSH at Rm 1.01 and Cepat at Rm 0.71, and General raider is very confident good tidings are coming loh!

Do not listen to the naysayers like 3iii, See and Mike as there serve no purpose in your successful money making scheme mah!

Raider
You went bankrupt and Calvin helped you.
Each and every person inside i3 forums knows this.

Thats why you helped Calvin in the NetX dodgy deal.
Now you again help Calvin, defending against 3iii.

Its time for you to stop hammering in those coffin nails into Calvin's coffin.
Calvin will be buried without your help.
You help Calvin = Means Calvin is guilty, everyone knows this.

It was very interesting to see calvintaneng and his side-kick raider posting on my Petdag, Nestle and now DLady.

Perhaps they should know that these long term stocks remain and are still multi-baggers in my portfolio.

Regards.

Do u all notice that 3iii like raider has been criticizing Icap TTB for lack of good performance return for the last 7 yrs ? Surprisingly the excuse given by TTB is exactly the same like what 3iii had given loh!

3iii should focus on what have went wrong on Nestle & Dlady for the past 7 yrs, instead of making bad excuse & trying to divert attention from his failure by attacking sifu calvin loh!

In other words, 3iii should study & learn what have gone wrong in Nesle & Dlady and explain to us what action had been done to improve his investment return going fwd loh!

Taking 3iii info on Dlady......it was trading at around Rm 65 per share about 7 yrs ago loh!
At the time 3iii was big singing n praising Dlady at such a high price which is overvalue loh!
Just look at the matrix of dlady at that time loh!
NTA around Rm 6.00
PE above 60%
Div yield around 1.5%

How can u support such an overvalue share, if u r a genuine investors leh ?
The main issue lies with 3iii is dishonesty pushing a highly overvalue bluechip dlady to the naive i3 investors loh!

Thats why people like Raider, Leno & calvin tan came out strongly to refute 3iii for his dishonesty which was proven correct if u look at Dlady price now around Rm 23.00 loh!

U see when Dlady was above Rm 65.00, 3iii singing loud praises of Dlady but when the price collapse to Rm 23.00 this 3iii is very silence like a dumbell loh!

Rightfully u should promote the stocks when its price is low....just like what Raider did when Insas was Rm 0.67 (even b4 preference share & warrant scheme}, General Raider was promoting heavily insas until to the extend Philip was so annoyed and come out to bet with Raider on his QL Rm 6.70 v Insas Rm 0.67 loh!

To cut the story short, the end result raider won the bet loh!
But General Raider as a ....gentleman did not want Philip to pay up for the bah kut teh & the purpose message cost as Philip had promise bcos Raider knows, that he already score the point no point making philip embrass loh!

The morale of the story here is that u.....do not ever promote "An overvalue stock like the case of dlady mah" bcos this will cause losses to naive investors loh!

U only promote deep undervalue stock with very big margin of safety, bcos this will help investors to make alot of money safely like the case of raider promote insas mah!

This is what we call genuine fundamental investment loh!

Stock 2004 2024
UMW 2.50 5.00 (taken private)
DLady 4.80 23.00
Nestle 23.00 120.00
Petdag 3.50 22.00

Just pointing to calvintaneng the difference between truth and lies. Good morning.

It is truly remarkable, the power of compounding and the ability to identify these companies with earnings power over the long term.

Do you know that DLady was priced RM 1.60 per share, Nestle RM 6 to RM 8 per share and Petdag RM 2.00 per share in the 1990s?

The prices of these stocks have dropped from their highest and DLady has dropped a lot. There are various reasons for these. How you exploit these opportunities depend on how you approach your investing. Regards.
