Stocks Close at Record Highs as Spread of Coronavirus Seen Slowing

https://www.google.com.my/amp/s/www.thestreet.com/.amp/markets/dow-sets-record-stocks-rise-as-coronavirus-spread-slowing

BY JOSEPH WOELFEL , UPDATED: FEB 12, 2020 1:30 PM EST | ORIGINAL: FEB 12, 2020

The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq close at all-time highs as the number of new coronavirus infections slows.
1.
2. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at all-time highs after China said the number of new coronavirus infections slowed to the lowest rate in nearly two weeks.
3. Coronavirus update: 1,118 deaths, 45,206 infected.
4. BP is Real Money's Stock of the Day. The European oil giant has set a "net zero" target for emissions by 2050.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at all-time highs Wednesday after China said the number of new coronavirus infections slowed to the lowest rate in nearly two weeks.
The Dow finished up 275.08 points, or 0.94%, to 29,551.42, the S&P 500 rose 0.65% to 3,379.45, and the Nasdaq closed up 0.90% to 9,725.96.
The three exchanges all set intraday highs as well.

The coronavirus outbreak -- the World Health Organization said the official name for the disease caused by the new coronavirus is Covid-19 -- has killed 1,118 people and infected more than 45,200.
But the rate of infections is slowing according to China's National Health Commission, which was hopeful that the spread of the virus around China, the world's second-largest economy, has peaked.
The broader impact of the virus on China's growth, as well as its influence on economies around the world, has yet to be quantified, however.

"We are closely monitoring the emergence of the coronavirus, which could lead to disruptions in China that spill over to the rest of the global economy," Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell told the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday, adding that there will "very likely be some effects on the United States." He told the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday that the Fed should have an idea how much the outbreak has impacted the U.S. economy “fairly soon.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders was declared the winner and Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., came in a very close second in a tight race for the Democratic presidential nomination in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday.
Wall Street's reaction to the Sanders win was muted as many investors don't think the senator can win the presidency or believe that if he wins his socialist beliefs and anti-establishment proposals won't pass muster with Congress.
Health care stocks such as UnitedHealth (UNH) - Get Report, which was leading the Dow, rose since Sanders isn't predicted to defeat Donald Trump and therefore his Medicare for All proposal won't get off the ground.
CVS Health (CVS) - Get Report posted stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings but forecast fiscal-year profit that was modestly shy of Wall Street forecasts.

The Malaysian economy was badly hit in the fourth quarter of 2019 (4Q19) as it grew by 3.6%, the lowest level since the third quarter of 2009..... Badly hit yet governor smile so sweet as in the photo. Obviously some may not be affected despite economy is bad or a weaker ringgit.

As long as it is not negative. M'sia 's debt shot up to near limits after Jibby splashed stimulus in the wake of 2009 GFC. Was this oversized big splash, which we could hardly afford, really necessary then ?

Now, we have even less room to manoeuvre due to debt ceiling. The saving grace is the national debt is mostly denominated in MYR.

The US stockmarts went up due to mostly share buybacks by the companies themselves instead of investing in R & D.

Glad to see non stop greedy politicians fighting for power and $ which ended up market top among Asian countries from the bottom.
With reserves of only USD 109 billion, no significant improvement in many aspects except corruption in a better position but have yet to see any big sharks go into jail etc, future remains dim. It will be even worst if US crash and virus takes an unexpected longer time to recover.

If EPF can give 5% dividends annually on average, it will take about 14 years + for 100% return, a 6% dividend will shorter it to 12 years. How long it will take for MBB price to double to $16?

https://www.sinchew.com.my/content/content_2217059.html?%E6%95%A6%E9%A9%AC%EF%BC%9A%E5%BF%85%E9%81%B5%E5%AE%88%E8%AF%BA%E8%A8%80%C2%B7%E2%80%9CAPEC%E5%90%8E%E8%BE%9E%E9%A6%96%E7%9B%B8%E8%81%8C%E2%80%9D

2020-02-14 17:20:32
https://www.sinchew.com.my/content/content_2217173.html

HONG KONG: Hong Kong is facing "tsunami-like” shocks, and may incur a record budget deficit in the next fiscal year as the city counts the costs of the Covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak after months of social unrest, Financial Secretary Paul Chan said on Sunday (Feb 16).

The impact of the epidemic on the Hong Kong economy is being felt beyond retail, food and beverage and tourism-related industries, Chan said in a blog post Sunday.

The short-term economic outlook is "cautious,” and shocks can cause the unemployment rate to "deteriorate rapidly,” Chan said.

Foreign investors will never trust Malaysian government.
They never keep promises and always look for scapegoats to enrich themselves.
