@Ravetidus, From an investment perspective, as outlined by the expert in the article, if DC is so profitable, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) should easily be able to secure funding from the market. However, TNB views it as a cost that want transfer to consumers rather than reaping substantial profits. This speaks volumes about the prospects of DC.

Tenaga has to build more Transmission Towers and substations and raise tariff
Failing which we can expect widespread power failure both nationwide and in all DC centers

TENAGA: How strong is its economic moat? #TENAGA, #TNB

Tenaga relies on government subsidies, amounting to around 5 billion MYR per year. This dependence suggests that their business model may not be economically sustainable, potentially because our electricity rates are priced well below the market rate. Over time, this situation could mirror that of RON95, where the government will gradually withdraw the subsidy to reduce public debt.
The Malaysian government may soon realize that power-hungry data centers could do more harm than good for the country. Corporations like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are not charitable organizations. When they establish operations in Malaysia, they will likely demand that Tenaga or the government ensures the reliability of our power supply. In other words, Tenaga or the government might need to compensate for any loss of revenue in the event of a power outage.
Recognizing the potential economic drawbacks of data centers, the government may impose strict regulations. This will particularly affect smaller data centers like YTL Power, which may struggle to meet stringent green requirements.

Tenaga is a monopoly
Now with Data Center hungry for electricity Demand will amplify
Without raising Tariff Govt give Rm5.9 Bil subsidy to Tnb
Why not raise tariff?
All these Nvidia, Amazon, Google, Oracle are Trillions $ companies and sure can pay a little more for electricity
1 week ago
If raise tariff and reduce subsidy, net impact will be same?
However, if raise tariff, consumers will shift to be more energy efficient/ solar panels or reduce usage, thus profits should be under pressure?
Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have very high standard for ESG so Tenaga will be transformed into a clean energy producer but this transformation will be expensive (dirty coal is the cheapest form of energy). Ultimately, Tenaga may have no option but to use nuclear power or else with the power-hungry Data Center existing government subsidy will balloon from 5b to maybe 10b.
maybe do not need nuclear power, since crazy Trump is gonna take over soon, maybe he will ban Google, Amazon and Microsoft from setting up data centres outside of US, in case u know important information is obtained by other countries such as China

Fantastic news
Now Govt raise high premium charges for Data Centers that consume electricity voraciously
See

This is merely an opinion from the Natural Resource Minister as electricity does not fall under his jurisdiction Furthermore, could he override Finance Minister and the International Trade Minister to raise tariffs? It is doubtful without a comprehensive tariff for all.

Seem like that. Until now, TNB, BURSA and SC still keep silent and not clarify on the statement issued by TNB last month is FAKE NEWS or not. But the small holders who rushed in for the "GOOD" news already burn.

anyway if DC theme failed in Malaysia, Tenaga will bear significant losses as they have already started to increase capacity, could be looking at RM8-9 in the future

jadi tak perlu tergesa-gesa masuk skrang, maka tunggu harga kurang drpd RM10 ...

calvintaneng You are right about special premium / tariff for data center. It has had been discussed and agreed upon by the The Planning and Implementation of Electricity Supply and Tariff Committee (JPPPET) but details have yet to be sorted out. Also, it will take 3 years to see significant capacity additional due to long lead time for a new power plant to reach commercial operation, but good news may start to surface on project award in months to come. So expect a lot of volatility in the short term. Share market is about sentiment and perception, unless you are a long term investor. The support is RM13 and Resistance is RM15, share price may be traded in this range for a while.
Tenaga has started to upgrade the grid to cope with RE and embark on coal-to-gas conversion journey. Only thing is that DC theme has grown exponentially and now everyone incl. government is hitting the panic button due to over commitment. Besides of the western hyperscalers, there are also a lot of other Chinese DCs and regional DCs. Don't think US will pull the brake, then the Chinese will gain more ground in ASEAN.

Senyap senyap Trump has started billions worth of DC infrastructure project in US, Trump may ask players like Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, Equinix to shift back to US, thus resulting in overcapacity here in Malaysia, banyak DC here but no ppl using it
6 days ago
TNB will probably continue drop till 20-Jan when Trump become king again, and stagnant till decision from Trump about AI sales. There is no hurry to buy TNB for now, just wait

Ravetidus It is not senyap-senyap but everyone already knew that US is accelerating the GenAI data center is sucking up the power generation capacity incl. powering up old nuclear. EC, TNB and our government also knew that they need to move fast to secure the power generation slots, otherwise they wouldn't be able to have the power ready in time.
The global distribution of generative AI data centers is driven by the need for low latency (minimizes processing and response time and enhance user experience), regulatory compliance, scalability, cost efficiency, and resilience. By strategically placing data centers around the world, companies can better serve their diverse user base, optimize resource usage, and ensure the reliability of their generative AI services. It does not make sense to have the data center concentrated in one place, and they should be close to a diverse customer base.
You should be blessed living in Malaysia and Malaysia is a strategic for EE and DC. Singapore is imposing moratorium (or at least in part) due limitation in infrastructure/utility, Indonesia is strengthening data sovereignty (mandate to keep data within Indonesian borders), Vietnam is still in part single-party Communist ruling, etc

@SENoob, yes u are thinking like a rational person, but is Trump a rational person or will he only have ONE thing on his mind : CYBERSECURITY, no way for China to get their hands on valuable piece of technology and data

As far back as 2018, there was talks of banning China accessing DATA CENTER facilty ,beside blocking China sourcing NVidia GPU chips. So far ,only the later is enforced vigorously by outgoing Biden. Part 2 coming yet?

Ravetidus. Here is the AI generated response to your view. The question of whether Donald Trump is rational can be subjective and depends on the context in which you’re evaluating his actions and decisions. Rationality can be defined in various ways, including logical reasoning, consistency in decision-making, and alignment with one’s goals.
Supporters might argue that his actions are rational in the context of his political strategy, business interests, or personal beliefs. They may see his approach as effective in achieving his objectives, whether in terms of gaining political support or advancing his agenda.
Critics, on the other hand, may argue that some of his statements and actions lack logical consistency or are driven by emotion rather than reasoned thought. They might point to instances where his behavior appears impulsive or contradictory.
Ultimately, whether one views Trump as rational may depend on individual perspectives, political beliefs, and interpretations of his behavior.

And this is ChatGPT response to AI-chips. Yes, there are several alternatives to U.S.-made AI chips, as the global semiconductor industry is diverse and includes various manufacturers and technologies. Here are some notable alternatives:
Chinese AI Chips: Companies like Huawei (with its Ascend series), Alibaba (with its Hanguang 800), and Baidu (with its Kunlun chips) are developing AI chips tailored for various applications, including cloud computing and autonomous driving.
European AI Chips: European companies such as STMicroelectronics and Infineon Technologies are also working on AI-related semiconductor technologies. The European Union has been investing in semiconductor research and development to reduce reliance on non-European suppliers.
Japanese AI Chips: Companies like Fujitsu and Sony are involved in developing AI chips, particularly for applications in robotics and consumer electronics.
Israeli AI Chips: Israel has a vibrant tech ecosystem, with companies like Habana Labs (acquired by Intel) and others developing AI accelerators and chips.
Other Global Players: Companies like AMD, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm in the U.S. are also significant players in the AI chip market, but they are not the only options. Additionally, companies in South Korea (like Samsung) and Taiwan (like TSMC) are crucial in semiconductor manufacturing and may produce chips for various AI applications.
Open-Source Hardware: There are also initiatives in the open-source hardware community that aim to create alternatives to proprietary AI chips, allowing for more customizable and potentially cost-effective solutions.
The landscape of AI chips is rapidly evolving, and many countries and companies are investing in developing their own technologies to meet the growing demand for AI processing power.

Trump is a shrewd business man, and if US lost the AI lead or ground to others, they may not regain the throne. It's vital to ensure having data center close to the users and diverse the data center locations.

@Cipta, DCs set up in Malaysia because of cheap electricity tariffs, if TNB naik tariff then most will cabut to other countries...however, the DCs not willing to invest in new capacity, instead pressures TNB to do so at their own cost, TNB no choice but to increase tariff to all, including public, but government needs to jaga welfare of ppl if they want to stay in power in the future, looks like TNB is getting squeeze in the middle
