hi all, newbie here. since last year i bought 2500 shares in total with an average of 7.216. I am planning to hold this counter for long term, and would like your esteemed advise if possible whether i should consider the DRP to increase my shareholding, or just wait for the cash payout. Appreciate any advice, thanks!

Hi guys, a newbie here too. How to evaluate whether a reinvestment worth it or not? Thank you

Posted by xiaoGinna6969 > 2021-06-03 11:44 | Report Abuse

@tianqi888 If you have RM 10k or more, at current price you can profit a bit.

However nothing guarantees stock price stay this high when you get the alloted shares end of June.

Posted by staypositive > 2021-06-03 12:41 | Report Abuse

@ace4andy I guess if you are still young and not in a rush to use the cash, then just opt for DRIP and collect more shares. It's not 100% share reinvestment only 21 sen of 38.5 sen dividend which is about 55%. So you still get back some cash :)

Posted by staypositive > 2021-06-03 13:56 | Report Abuse

But thinking of the fee
Full cash dividend: 2500*.385= 962.5
DRIP portion: .21/.385= 54.55%
Amount of DRIP: 962.5*.5455= RM525.04 (DRIP)
Fees: RM13/RM525.04= 2.47%
Current price= 8.2/7.55= 1.0861 (8.61% higher)

So still earn 5% =D
But any decision is good decision good luck!

ace4andy and tianqi888

If you plan to remain investing in Maybank you should maximise your DRP allowance*, you will then get the maximum benefit of the dividend. One caveat, as long as the share price remains above (or at) the strike price of RM7.55. The cost of buying the shares is RM13 while the minimum broker cost (PB2U) is RM28 ++.

* in my case including odd-lots as they also earn dividend and can be rounded down into a full lot at a future date.

morningsunshine: I guess the drp wouldn't have been a good deal then. Can just buy more if it goes that low and average your position down. Either way, maybank is good for long term holders.

morningsunshine: nothing happens to drp as the price was fixed weeks back... dropping below 7.55 .. it is possible but not probable ( why? cos epf and foreign fund pushed very hard to this low drp price, and they lose ( unless unavoidable major negative event )

For large-sized banks, he likes Public Bank (target price [TP]: RM4.50) for its defensive qualities in uncertain times and Maybank (TP: RM9.40) for its superior yield.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Malaysia should not reintroduce a blanket moratorium or a freeze in loan repayments for all borrowers under the current total lockdown, as it is unnecessary and would not make financial sense when the government needs to ensure sufficient financial resources for the long fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the finance minister argued today.

Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should

I was recently quoted in the media that the government cannot compel banks to give a blanket moratorium, and this was subsequently taken out of context by opportunistic quarters promoting their populist agenda. To clarify, under the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 2009 (CBA) and the Financial Services Act 2013 (FSA), the Minister of Finance does not have the authority to instruct the banks to give an automatic moratorium. Further, under the current Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021, any new legislation has to be approved by Cabinet and then presented to the Yang Dipertuan Agong for His Royal Highness’ assent.

Section 4 of the Emergency Ordinance confers powers to the government to acquire and mobilise any resources necessary for public good, but Section 5 clearly stipulates that any compulsory measure by the government must be matched by a compensation to the party that has yielded its resources. In short, this cannot be done at zero cost to the government.

But just because we can, does that mean we should? Repeating the blanket moratorium also means that the government may need to significantly compensate banks for a measure that was not even necessary in the first place.

hokf95: in my opinion, in a perfect world. common sense tells us dilution do occur; BUT in an imperfect world there will be some pakat-pakat and fund taking advantage to lower the price as a buying oppurtunity or pushing the price to offload. IF u are a long term investor; just go sleep mode and take take ur dividend about 6-9% pa and cap gains as u go along and sell if u see any >6% in a 3 day period and buy back if it falls below 8% in a few days period... u would be settled in life( just my 2 sen)

BNN jaga Malaysia.. so they will pushpeople to pay and help banks make profit as dividend is the base that helps KWAP TH kwsp and ASN ASB to pay stakeholders... so if anyone dontwant to pay and wants moratarium, it is also fine as they skip payments they will end up paying more in intrest to banks... remember this important fact: If u buy a house for 500k, they is no cash transection to the seller , just a gurantee in a ledger held in the bank together with the documents in file for that amount,. NO PHYSICAL DELEVERY occurs.. just a record and banks makes billions from this simple fact... smart eh banks?

Surely the funds have to make a profit, how do they do that if they drive the price down? I for sure will accumulate if the price gets more attractive - it's already interesting at RM8.2.

If they could manage to drive the price down, they should have done that from when the DRP option was released to the shareholders to the time they need to be submitted - people would then take the cash option.

This share is not going to drop to drp price 7.55
Especially after good qtr results
That’s why go for max drp

bobvic96: It works like this. They Fund which has big intrest in MBB will influence u to take up drp . Hence u will get less cash and u will keep that cash. Once u wait for the new shares to be able to sell (rich investors wont bother and just accumulate) the fund will keep selling push the price down.
SO when u are able to sell the new drp shares the prices are quite low ( but not near 7.22) so u will be forced to sell lower than this price (8.20). Then the fund will pick it off the weak sellers and after sometime they will push it again to sell off... Remember this : Price Fund keep high now:8.20
Your DRP 7.55. They push down (perhaps)7.90. Then up again to 8.25// they sell ur drp and make good profit...

Why dont we study if this happens .. u can check to see if i am right or wrong.... after all these are my opinion...... Thanks... Even if i am wrong , we will do the oppisite the next drp round.... ok?

tollebunsmith Thanks for the explanation / viewpoint. If they drive the price down, I'll accumulate unless something drastic happens to the business fundamentals.

Usually, shares drop in value after the ex-date, MBB and a couple of others I hold have been quite resilient in maintaining their share price, one even increasing..

"Even if i am wrong , we will do the oppisite the next drp round.... ok?"

Maybe, I'll consider what the options are at that time.

Haha.....no one need to wait for the drp shares to come before they can sell...
....if investors want to convert their drp allocation into cash, they can sell anytime after the ex dividend date.

.....if you have 10k drp....you sell the shares in your hand first....then wait for the drp to add back to your existing shares....why need to wait for drp shares?? haha.
