Maybank cannot afford to give dividend because many loan defaults or non performing loans.
Where to get money to pay dividend when debtors are not paying the interest/profit on loans?

Banks are very calculative. With all SME and corporations suffer losses, banks will not give out dividends during recession. Maybank is no different

every corporate are calculative, they are not running charity. Back to Maybank, they have very wide spectrum of customer in their portfolio; and SME is only a fraction of them. If Maybank is hitting hard by covid, i am pretty sure all other banks in Malaysia are equally same if not worse.

Posted by smallbird9 > 2020-05-27 22:56 | Report Abuse

In fact most banks margins are hit by covid but being the largest bank will definitely be dragged down far worse than its peers. Expect the unexpected coming..maybe a surprising big fall in profits or even losses in next quarter

Hi harold8990,
if invest in Maybank 100lots and averaging around rm6.5...rm650000 capital then yearly 57-60 cents dividend amounting to 57k - 60k a year..divide by 12 get around 5k a month doing nothing...

Do we need to pay tax on the above dividend income?

I look at the entitlement history and notice -->Single-tier interim cash dividend RM0.25 (with Dividend Re-Investment Plan)
Can anyone explain what is the above means? Does it means Maybank giving RM0.25 dividend or giving us some share quantity that equivalent to RM0.25?

Samheong78, from what i know, we dont have to pay tax for that..unlike REITs then we need to pay tax on the dividend which will be cut straightaway from the dividend before it is credited to you..Dividend Reinvestment plan means you have the option of allocating an approved portion of your dividend to buy Maybank shares at a discounted price, with an approved limit given by the house..this means that your average price for maybank shares will become lower and lower the longer you keep your shares.

samheong78, for REIT if there is no tax on the income if more than 90% of its income is distributed out to its shareholder which means that the tax obligation now is on the shareholder. And for the dividend you earn from those listed companies, you don't have to pay anymore tax as they already taxed before the dividend is distributed to your account. There is no double taxation in Malaysia, either tax upfront or later.

The 25 cents split into 2 portion, ie cash dividend and option to reinvest. You can refer to their announcement.

For DRP, refer to https://www.maybank.com/iwov-resources/corporate/document/my/en/pdf/Maybank_DRP_General_FAQ.pdf

Reinvest is a bad option. With expanding shares means the future earnings per share will drop.

With HP loan deferred, and housing loands too, and soon many will default after the 6 months memorandum. The evaluation of banks are too crazy already. Wait till 30 June for short selling to be activated, then see how big shark eat ikan billis. Dont fall for it.

Banks seek concessions to help ease hire purchase pain

"BANKS, expected to take a hit from not being able to impose additional charges for hire purchase (HP) instalments that are deferred over the six-month moratorium period, are in talks with Bank Negara Malaysia and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) on some options to help mitigate the impact, sources say."

Big Sharks unloading overpriced stock to Ikan Billis, Becareful. Dont do stupid. Dont use margin to play. 30 June is when short selling comes back. Becareful and never ever ever use margin. Dont get trapped.
